Well, from what I've observed, people usually associate the "MM sound" with the single they've first known the group with. I don't have data (this theory is taken from observation only) but generally speaking, if you first knew about the group during their Emo-Musume years, that's likely the sound you'll associate the group with. If you became a fan during the latter Golden Era, that's also the "classic" MM sound for you.
But there are also those who don't associate the group with any particular sound. Either they've known the group for a long time, or is just receptive to the many musical directions the group took in its history, or may just love the group unconditionally, without expectations or standards and enjoys the music as it is.
Again, this isn't undeniable fact. Just my observation on the different kinds of MM fans.
