Yeah it's sort of odd when people say "this doesn't sound very Morning Musume". What is Morning Musume supposed to sound like exactly? Morning Musume has been always changing and experimenting with different sounds, so when a new single/bside/album song comes out if it sounds fresh and new then it's probably a good thing.

Well, from what I've observed, people usually associate the "MM sound" with the single they've first known the group with. I don't have data (this theory is taken from observation only) but generally speaking, if you first knew about the group during their Emo-Musume years, that's likely the sound you'll associate the group with. If you became a fan during the latter Golden Era, that's also the "classic" MM sound for you.

But there are also those who don't associate the group with any particular sound. Either they've known the group for a long time, or is just receptive to the many musical directions the group took in its history, or may just love the group unconditionally, without expectations or standards and enjoys the music as it is.

Again, this isn't undeniable fact. Just my observation on the different kinds of MM fans.

Morning Musume does have a specific sound. But it depends what Morning Musume。you are talking about.
Although if I would have to decided I would say 'Funky' just because that's Tsunku's sound and every incarnation of Morning Musume。has at least done one song in this style.

Morning Musume's sound is the sound of cash entering Tsunku's pockets from songwriting credits.

I only paid a very small amount to the conversation on top of what I'm about to say. That's how I roll. 8)

Hello!Project as a whole, have a sound that isn't very idolish. They try to be hip and cool and roll with the times as well as bend to the whims of whatever Tsunku decides to experiment with in the ways of song and style concept. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I love that about Tsunku, the way he experiments and always something new instead of giving us the same thing for 15 years.
