TotallyUncool wrote:The last Windows update a few days ago gave my system just too many unrecoverable errors! So I finally bit the bullet, and did a full reinstall of Windows 10, this time on the solid state drive that I had installed a while ago. The old Windows installation had been on a 500 GB disc based hard drive, and it was so full of junk that it took at least 20 minutes to even boot up! Now, my system starts within a minute or two, and everything so far is nice and clean, although I don't know how long it will stay that way. But just installing Windows, updating it and getting some basic software for work put on the system has been a fairly epic journey, and I'm going to spend a lot of the weekend just reinstalling software and logging back in to websites!

Spinning disks are still good for back-up duty, but having an SSD for the OS is a great idea. Linux is not without hair-pulling moments but it's been working for me since I had a bad reaction to Windows 8. Whenever I'm on a windows machine these days I find myself highly annoyed ("what do you mean I can't open another tab in the file manager!?"; "so if I want to move this window I have to drag it from the bar?"; " you need to scan for viruses??" etc).

Wild turkeys eh? Alright, alright, alright! ;)

TU: Yeah swapping stuff over to an SSD is a great move. Not only for the speed but they're also less likely to randomly crap out than an HDD. (I may read your post as a testimonial to convince my dad to let me upgrade his. :mikihead: )

The 91-day warranty on my PC recently ran out, so I finally cracked the tower open and took a look to see what kind of upgrades I could make. It's not like there's anything wrong with it; I just wanna know I can swap things out if I want to later on.
First order of business was getting a PCIe WiFi card. I've had to use external WiFi and Bluetooth adapters from day 1, and lately the sound on my headphones would drop out even though they were connected. (I made sure it wasn't a problem with the headphones themselves first!)
My WiFi was also pretty sluggish and disconnected frequently. Ever since I installed the card, I haven't had a single issue with my internet or the sound dropping out. A pretty good 35 dollar investment. :thumbs-up:

Next on my list will be a SATA M.2 SSD, and eventually I'd like to replace the optical drive with one that supports Blu-ray.

The WiFi with my router was pretty bad until my sister bought a booster (I was going to get one, but she beat me to it XD ) - now everybody in the house gets a decent signal.

My basic approach to Windows (and MS Office) is to beat it up until it doesn't give me any more trouble (or at least not much). I work for a software company that develops strictly for Windows, so I pretty much need to have it on my main system at home. But Linux is looking better and better these days - I usually have fairly recent distributions (Kubuntu or Debian lately) installed on spare laptops, mostly to keep up with the current state of the system (and to run Xscreensaver for cheap background entertainment). I would seriously be Ok with Windows disappearing entirely and being replaced by various Linux/Unix distributions (although I know that developers would spend about six months going crazy as they tried to port everything over :mikihead: ).

This evening's turkey sightings. Second time tonight seeing turkeys. I was driving the first time 1/4 mile away. They were two big adults. This photo I could take because I was at a stop sign.

I sure love living in a town with actual growth, because they recently put fiber optic internet in our neighborhood.* :w00t:
We signed up for it, and it'll actually be cheaper than what we have now, so I'm interested in seeing the results for myself.

*My hometown in Tennessee (with a population of less than 2,000!) actually got it like, a year after I moved away. I was shocked, lol.

Proof of Turkey
Two hours ago as I was coming out of my house, a woman walking her dog told me that I had just missed a family of turkeys, and that they had just turned the corner.

In my area (the San Gabriel Valley, east of L. A., and pretty far inland) it was mostly rain, with a few hours of moderate wind. The mountains and desert areas farther to the east got some very heavy rain and wind, including flooding and serious damage, and some of the areas near the coast got hit fairly hard.
