〜 and ~ being two different characters with no way of telling which is which unless you, say, paste them into Notepad side by side is going to be the death of me.

The other inconsistencies (spacing, capitalisation, full-width vs. half-width punctuation marks) I can at least deal with. But those two symbols? There's no visual difference in most interfaces. I have to manually check each and every one of them.

^ I'm so glad that none of my proofreading jobs has ever required me to enter that particular circle of Unicode hell. Distinguishing by sight between an opening single quote (U+2018 ‘ LEFT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK) and the Hawaiian ʻokina (U+02BB ʻ MODIFIER LETTER TURNED COMMA) would be similarly difficult. Seeing a goof like “May of ‘67” will make my eyeballs bleed, though! XD

Halloween "Guilty Squirrel" Story
I restarted putting shelled peanuts on my fence again about two weeks ago because I noticed a new replacement squirrel hanging out on my side of the street. The peanuts always vanished. One day last week as I came out my backdoor with garbage, I was startled by what I saw on the fence. It was a “statue” I was thinking of a squirrel or was it. Time stopped for us both for twenty seconds or so. Not a hair moved on the squirrel. “If you don’t move, I can’t see you right?” It was creepy. I need to get a picture but I did not have my phone. As I turned my head away thinking of getting the phone. He vanished into thin air, like a Bigfoot but without a sound.

Two days later as I was returning my garbage recycle bins to my back yard, I saw another “statue” on my backyard grass. I have a combination lock on the gate which I must look over from the front yard to unlock. That is when I was startled again by this squirrel. Time stopped again, no phone again. It is creepy. By the time I unlocked the lock and opened the gate he vanished again. I have no idea where he went because there was no sound. XD

Honestly, I'm grateful for Unicode but it seems like a lot of symbols are either messy or have had errors in the past. I do not envy the developers.

^ The existence of Unicode fonts has made my own work sooooooo much easier! I remember the days before Unicode, and, well,

A friend of mine is a major player in the development of Unicode. Not surprisingly, he has very strong opinions on typographical matters. XD

Unicode makes a huge difference - I remember the days of downloading Jpop using WinMX on a Windows 98 system, trying to figure out what to do with file names like "02 - モーニング娘。 - その場面でビビっちゃいけないじゃん!.mp3". XD

The fun of having a Mac for most of my fandom days and getting that even more because the coding between Macs and Windows systems was sometimes different...

(Or, at least, I think that's what happened)

^^ ugh I still have probably hundreds of mp3 files with those hellish cross-encodings.

Regarding your issue Starra, I seem to recall a typeface in which each glyph, below its usual shape, had a tiny representation of its numeric character code. So it would look something like this when you typed:

愛の園~Touch
0x611B 0x306E 0x5712 0xFF5E 0x54 0x6F 0x75 0x63 0x68

But now I can't find it anywhere...was I dreaming the whole time?
