During the lockdowns, when I was going out maybe once per week for mail and groceries, I became very good at matching store sales with online coupons. So much so that I routinely saved 40–50% on my total grocery bill. Sure, I bought a lot of stuff that I didn't really want or need, but most of it was non-perishable and practically free. When my cabinets were full, I started stacking stuff on the counters…

It's amazing how quickly I've gotten out of that routine. Stockpiling like that inevitably consumes your thoughts and limits your choices, until you just want to go out for a freaking burger.

boinsie: Reminds me that I haven't seen the grocery store geese around lately. Hopefully I'll get to see them one more time.

Random bit of trivia that I learned just last night: Melonpan (メロンパン) was invented by an Armenian.

Today I learned (TIL) the British slang "spag bol" is short for "spaghetti bolognese," or what Americans call "spaghetti with meat sauce." That's it.

I knew it was a British dish: one of my father's grandmothers was from Cornwall, she gave several recipes to my mother so that she could cook them for my father, and then my mother gave those recipes to me. But we all call it simply "spaghetti."

I also knew it's not an Italian dish, at least not directly. In authentic Italian cuisine, bolognese is more like a stew and it's rarely poured over pasta. Doing so is very much a British thing that was subsequently brought to America. "Italian" restaurants that serve it do so because it's expected, like "Chinese" restaurants that serve twenty different varieties of sugar-glazed chicken nuggets.

Anyhow, I thought the slang "spag bol" had a more interesting story behind it, like "spotted dick" (bread pudding with raisins/currants) or "toad in the hole" (sausages in Yorkshire pudding), but apparently not.

No ducks, how about some geese?

I got an assortment on display for you. This is a common occurrence (In the summer/fall) for me to see if I go down Route 20. I usually avoid going down this part because one, the traffic sucks and two, this happens A LOT. I usually can avoid it for the most part. But at the time I wasn't driving (hence the pictures) so it couldn't be avoided. This also happens a lot with Turkeys too. The turkey population has exploded in the last few years. The turkeys on the other hand are smart enough to stay on the side of road and know how to avoid the cars. The geese on the other hand just don't care and will make YOU wait till they are good and ready to let you pass. They are sassy, especially the Canadians.

The Canadian are obviously immigrants while the white ones are not, they live at the house. :mikihead:

Over the years there has been a big of cross breeding between the two, but you don't see it as much anymore.
