Day 2-3 of the rain. I forget. I’m cold and my body doesn’t know what to do so it’s shutting down and going into, let’s give her a cold mode. Nooooo.

I hope everyone's pets are safe from the fireworks and loud booms today. Every year, it is a problem for my dog.

People around us have been putting them off for two weeks now, but yesterday and today were definitely the worst of it. Bad enough the cat decided the dreaded litter box was an acceptable evil (he hates the box, prefers doing his business in the bush by the house).

My dog didn't bark or whine; she was just a little clingy. It got really loud around 8:30/9:00. I still hear a few going off right now.

This was the first year that I've heard virtually nothing on the 4th. There were a couple of pops late last night that may or may not have been fireworks, but that's it.

On a normal 4th of July, I would have gone to a barbecue at my friends' house in Berkeley, but they cancelled it again because of COVID. Instead, I went shopping on my street. Some places were closed for the holiday, but I managed to find a birthday present for my sister, who turns 50 on Thursday, and a used book and two funny t-shirts for myself. I also went to Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers and had an excellent but expensive lunch.

I just bought my first post-lockdown concert ticket, to see the Dickies in November at the tiny live music venue in my neighborhood. There are a couple of shows at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco that I'd like to see before then, but since they're free and reservations open up while I'm at work, I'm not holding my breath.

I heard from my mom in the bay area that not as many regular people were shooting off fireworks there this year either, since people are finally starting to get the idea of the fire hazard they pose with as dry as it is. I kinda wish people had that idea here. All around my house there were pretty constant bangs for hours. Watching the news yesterday there were also a ton of local reports of people being injured or killed in firework mishaps... Well, I guess they have the freedom to kill themselves with fireworks here, huh?

It depends on the part of the Bay Area. One of my co-workers, who lives in Rockridge, one of the more upscale neighborhoods in Oakland, was complaining about the incessant noise from fireworks around his house.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The Fourth of July reeled into “12 hours of non-stop chaos” Sunday night with several victims wounded by celebratory gunfire, a homicide and a massive sideshow marred by gunfire. The night culminated at the sideshow, where more than 200 participants pelted police officers with debris and flashed them with hand-held lasers.

Embattled Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong told reporters that the level of violence and gunfire overwhelmed his officers.
“If you look at the shoot period of time of 6 hours with 6 shootings, that requires a lot of resources,” Armstrong said. “That was difficult and officers had to run from scene to scene.”

“This was 12 hours of non-stop chaos,” he continued. “This is one of the most violent July 4ths I can remember.”

I saw fireworks in New York, and they were really nice. I was just south of the UN Headquarters as far east as they’d allow us to go, and I got a great view of the fireworks. People seemed even less strict with masks in New York.

Just booked my vacation for after summer school is over. Going to Dubrovnik, Croatia for a bit over a week. I’ve been wanting to go for so long and there’s a direct flight from Newark, so I figured I’d just take the train from DC to Newark.
