When I'm writing, there are times when I'll look at a word, a phrase, or a bit of standard grammar that I've used all my life and think, Is this even real? Does it mean anything, or did I just make it up and instantly fool myself into thinking it's a normal part of the language?

I went to IKEA and bought some more Ivar shelf parts (to add to the one's I've already got set aside and waiting to be put together), then I went to Home Depot and bought a case of cheap-but-decent vinyl floor tiles. Now I'm busy not finding the time to do anything with them. :mikihead:

TotallyUncool wrote:I went to the more-or-less traditional Japanese-style New Year's Day celebration in Little Tokyo with the Japanese language meetup group - it draws a good crowd, but it is so low-key and relaxing compared to the Rose Parade. It includes the sake barrel opening (I watched while everybody else drank, and that's quite good enough for me), taiko drumming, dancing, speeches, mochi-pounding, and lots and lots of food vendors.

We ate at a ramen shop on 1st Street (kind of a tradition for the meetup group), and as I walked through the crowd afterward, I found myself sliding into the kind of leftover-adolescent philosophical/emo/poetic state of mind that I've always been inclined toward. Which seems about right for New Year's Day, and much, much, much better than the near-apocalypse, out-of-the-body first-day-of-the-year hangovers that I usually had when I actually was in my late teens and early 20s.

So - a good, semi-low-key New Year's event, with no air horns.

I’ve always wondered what part of California you lived in, little Tokyo is in LA Southern California right?

Happy New Year everyone!

My new year was quite nice. The traditional family party where we had so many snacks that the next morning every surface in our kitchen had tiny bowls of nuts and chocolate on it!

I’m rewatching some Hello! Morning video that are about on YouTube and it’s making me super nostalgic but in a good way. I love wholesome morning shows like that.

I'm about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, so everything in L.A. is pretty close (but I'm far enough away so that I can usually stay away from the heavy traffic).

Hello! Morning was so heartwarming and fun! I think that's at least half the reason why I keep coming back to the Jpop idol world - there are so many shows and events where the idols are (or at least seem to be) happy and having a good time, and I need a strong dose of that kind of fun to keep me going some times.

なつかしい! That show was the best, especially Haromoni Gekijou!

My brain seems to understand sugar more than it understands temperature -- it's cold (at least by Southern California standards), and rainy, and I'm getting hooked on Frutafresca Esquimales.

Congrats! What is the job? I remember you said you were studying linguistics, is that right?

Thanks!
Linguistics is my minor, my major is Computer Science. I got a Software Developement job in the city (NYC) for 80k base. I've started doing research into Roth IRA and stuff, I've heard people say at my age it's good to take the tax hit now instead of down the line, especially since I don't have obligations right now.
