It includes the sake barrel opening (I watched while everybody else drank, and that's quite good enough for me), taiko drumming, dancing, speeches, mochi-pounding, and lots and lots of food vendors.
We ate at a ramen shop on 1st Street (kind of a tradition for the meetup group), and as I walked through the crowd afterward, I found myself sliding into the kind of leftover-adolescent philosophical/emo/poetic state of mind that I've always been inclined toward. Which seems about right for New Year's Day, and much, much, much better than the near-apocalypse, out-of-the-body first-day-of-the-year hangovers that I usually had when I actually was in my late teens and early 20s.
So - a good, semi-low-key New Year's event, with no air horns.
