When I was a game script writer at AMS, I also put together/edited the audio track for
The Secret of the Lost Woods. We bought a bunch of sound-effects records (back then, everything was on vinyl
), and I had to repeatedly listen to every track that we used at high volume through earphones as I transferred them to 1/4 inch tape in the correct sequence and with the right timing.
It wasn't too bad, for the most part. But there was a point in the game where if the player made a moderately dumb move, he/she would get eaten by a rather neurotic, fussy dragon (
one of my characters ) -- and the sound that we used for that was one that absolutely set my teeth on edge: a huge dog slobbering over a bone, which I naturally had to listen to far too many times at much too loud a volume. Every time I had to listen to it, I just wanted to scream and run out of the building.
If madness made us strong, we would all be invincible.
