Not everyone here live "here" in NA or Europe, just saying... For my part I never come across much stigma to be an otaku/idol fan/all-around geek where I live but it's not exactly a highly regarded hobby. Same as anywhere else I suppose

Also, I disagree about fan recordings. Radio rips and MV links would be good, but concert rips? They tend to sound pretty different from the radio rips and the quality can be quite bad. So I'd personally be against that.

I'm not saying I won't update the first post just to be a dick or whatever. It just seems like a bit of a waste to me if nobody's going to read it, personally. But hey, if people actually do check first posts, I'll edit it I guess. I mean, I don't have anything better to do with my time .

Obviously when we get better rips, such as radio rips and whatnot, why not post the concert rips as that's the only ones we have of them right now? If one doesn't wanna listen then don't, but I'd rather take that than nothing at all.

idk. Japan sure has a lot of freedom in that sense, but their society for the average person and the expectations and "norms" they have to follow are far more ridiculous than many other countries. I mean, for example it's against the norm for a couple to kiss in public. Sure some people still do it, but it is generally frowned upon. In that sense, the "musts" and "must not" and whatever are far more in Japan, I find.

In that respect, it is not just Japan. In any east asian countries ( and islamic countries ) that is the rule. Even holding hands is not the norm. I think in Singapore you can be fined for kissing in public ( correct me if I'm wrong ).

if anything, it's *more* acceptable to be an otaku here, I think, nowadays at least.

I have heard something to that extent but it doesn't seem to be strong enough to deter the otaku culture.
Around my neck of the woods and from what I have read about the experiences of cosplayer overseas like in US. They don't go around cosplaying if there was no related convention taking place.
As for the manga culture, what I heard from a international Japanes programme, in Japan housewife, old people, young people - everyone reads it without being prejudiced. Most of the international guests ( mostly around mid 20's ) says that in their countries they would be outcast if they were found reading manga or comics becoz it is childish.

I live in Southern California, near Los Angeles, and I'd have to say that here, it kind of depends on where you are, and the circumstances. I know a few girls who dress in lolita outfits (gothic and sweet) most of the time (or at least not while they're at work), but that is pretty unusual. In Little Tokyo, near downtown L.A., I usually do see at least a few cosplayers (usually in small groups) on the weekend, not necessarily associated with any event.

But I think that's pretty much confined to Little Tokyo -- I suppose a lot of people feel more comfortable acting like they're in the real Tokyo there than they would in their neighborhood shopping mall.

Well. I read the first post and I'd honestly prefer if like covers and tracklistings were there especially when going through 25 pages to find information gets a bit tedious and no one likes when you ask a question that's been explained 5 pages back

Of course manga, anime, and cosplay are more common and acceptable in Japan. They're from Japan. Those things are accepted to be for people of all ages, whereas in the US a lot of people see them as comic books and cartoons for kids. However, I work at a public middle school and there are manga in the library, and the teachers let kids read them like any other books, so I think they are becoming more and more acceptable (but maybe the reading level has gotten poorer as well and anything helps).

Japan has more freedom than "most countries", but the point is that Japan is a highly-advanced capitalist power with a democratic government (so you can't compare it to, say, China). But it's also an East Asian country, so the focus on individualism is low and there is less freedom for individuals than countries like Canada, Sweden, USA, etc (side note: I'm surprised some countries aren't completely black on that graph, but I don't know how they measured it). The only fair comparison would be South Korea, and I'm sure they face similar issues.
