Conjunctivitis is more commonly called "pink eye". It's generally considered highly contagious. If you got it during school, you stayed home.
Wiki says it can be bacterial, viral, or even an allergic reaction.

You can get it from using someone elses makeup as well. (My mother always told me never to use someone else's mascara or eyeliner for this reason.) She might have reused her makeup and then that's how it spread to the other eye. I noticed she was still using it while she had it, from the blog photos. I'm sure that wasn't helping her at all either.
