It's more my kind of song than their recent stuff. Plus they had me at chicken outfits
I remember when at first we got a "preview" of the outfits and they looked like yellow blobs. Then we learned they were actually their best costumes ever shortly afterwards. Sadly I was really "meh" about the group during those days, but it made a big comeback later when I started liking the current line-up.

I usually dislike silly songs (Rm88 reminded me how much I hated yuke yuke monkey dance, but I eventually got to like it a lot, sans the costumes xD ), I don't consider Pyokox2 such a silly song, I actually like it a lot, it's very catchy. I just hate their chick outfits, that's all 
And both Koi no Dance Site and Happy Summer Wedding are at the bottom of my all time list and even though the "sexy beam" came out of it, after Love Machine, those were too weird for the general public, so I think those didn't sell as much because of the genre changing, singles were gradually declining since then.
They were still popular as idols, but people started losing interest in their music and I think they should have kept a different route then. Anyway, it's just what I think, ofc I can't know what would've happen

That's still two million sellers right there. Not AS much as Love Machine but that doesn't mean at all that their popularity was going downhill already. They were still popular, the songs still appreciated, the members still loved, but they weren't as shocking as Love Machine was - Love Machine was the first "silly" song after a bunch of serious "artist" songs and it was also Goto's first - an instantly popular member joining the group with an instantly popular song. It's bound to sell more.
Their popularity didn't start going down until after Goto left, I'd say. Followed by Yasuda, Abe and KagoTsuji.
