One more film in the PFA's Nikkatsu retrospective: Suzuki Seijun's Gate of Flesh (肉体の門 Nikutai no mon) from 1964. It's the story of a group of prostitutes and a thief, set in Tokyo during the American Occupation after World War II — an early example of pinku eiga in Suzuki's distinctive style.

I finally saw The Cabin in the Woods. It was a lot of fun, an entertaining spin on the genre, and the Kyoto bits in particular cracked me up. XD

But... as so often happens in TV shows and movies, even in some of my absolute favorites, one of my pet peeves reared its ugly head: BAD LATIN. Every sentence of the Latin incantation is grammatically incorrect, a clear example of bad dictionary translation. *sigh*

Ditto. Just finished it. I dislike slasher movies by default, so there's no way I can give it a full five stars on Netflix, but other than that, it was a fantastic genre-bender.

(If I dislike slasher movies, then why did I watch it in the first place? Because it's Joss Whedon!)

The Stuff — Larry Cohen's 1985 horror-comedy, in which the monster is a creamy, white, dessert product. One of the best bits is a TV commercial for The Stuff, starring Abe Vigoda and Clara "Where's the Beef?" Peller (for those few of you who are old enough to remember the '80s). XD

My movie for Halloween: The Whisperer in Darkness (2011), another wonderful faux-vintage Lovecraft adaptation from the fine folks at the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society.

I saw Wreck-It Ralph in 3-D this afternoon and enjoyed it very much, even though I have virtually no interest in video games per se.

Just watched it on Blu-ray. It's AKIRA set in the suburbs of current-day Seattle instead of in the slums of a near-future Tokyo. Really, that's all. There's a Tetsuo analog, and there's a Kaneda analog, and many of the sequences are shot-for-shot remakes. The only notable difference is that the Kaneda analog also gets telekinesis and doesn't have to rely on a glitchy laser rifle to put the Tetsuo analog down.

It was okay, but having seen AKIRA many times, I was not blown away.

To be fair, the director cites AKIRA as an "influence" (along with Carrie and The Fury), so… yeah.

Just saw this. It was pretty good, better than I expected. Too much time in Sugar Rush, though.

The short before it was wonderful.

Ikiru (生きる, 1952) — Kurosawa regular Shimura Takashi stars as a bureaucrat who learns that he has terminal cancer. He regards the diagnosis as a wake-up call: to stop being the mere paper-pusher that he's been for thirty years and use his position to do something meaningful.

What's better than a cheesy sci-fi B-movie? A cheesy sci-fi B-movie with Nazis! So I saw The 25th Reich at Another Hole in the Head in San Francisco.
