Wasn't Aruiteru a 2006 single? Era redeemed. Still Morning Musume's best song in my opinion.

Hahaha, if only because MM's downhill period started when Nacchi left. In 2003, all of their singles at least consistently hit 100k, but never did after Nacchi left in 2004, and they had a steady decline in popularity/sales/brand recognition (helped along by the consistent rate of graduation of all their remaining Golden Era members afterward) which didn't turn around until the release of 123. I'd put the dark ages as '05 to '10, under Yossi/Aichan leadership, and the platinum era being like a subset of the dark ages from '07 to '10, since success was still limited at that time, and the company in general was feeling uninspired all around. And then rebirth starting in 11 to now.

That's a unique way they decided to label and abridge MM's history though lol with platinum beginning in 03, but I guess that makes sense since Aichan has been the main singer/frontgirl since then. And though I am fond of "rebirth," calling it the Sayu era is cute hahaha.

I'd call 2005 to 2010 or so the "Hitting Bottom And Taking Too Long To Come Up For Air Era" XD

But all through that time -- as it was going on -- I thought (and still think) that it was due to uninspired, stuck-in-a-rut songwriting, production, and arrangement, along with kind of directionless leadership from the top (Tsunku and above), and not the result of any problems with the girls themselves. They really deserved better.

I assume this picture was taken by Sayu since it's posted on her blog and she's not in the shot but ...
The image of Sayu casually squatting/crouching in the middle of the street taking pictures of MM is too much for my puny mind to handle XD
EDIT : ah sayu actually weren't there at all, nvm :(

^Regardless of hitting bottoms/sinking ships in the general public impression or not, now that i think about it it's pretty amazing that Morning Musume and H!P as a whole survived. I've never really appreciate that before, being a fan myself, but staying afloat for 15 frikkin years is really something since pop music acts and especially such a niche as idol music is not exactly known for longevity.
That's at least one thing the guys upstairs are doing right.

That's absolutely true -- I was starting to get worried about their chances for survival a couple of years ago. And I'm very impressed with some of the clear and decisive moves that Tsunku and the higher-ups have made to turn thing around. It looks like they know what they want to do, they've got some good ideas about how to do it, and they're doing what it takes to make them happen.

Longevity certainly is H!Ps strong suit. At some point AKB48 and all of the other 48's will start to loose steam and decline. I'm willing to bet H!P will still be around then.
