OLDE SCHOOL JOY

Solid HarmoniE never had a hit in the USA, but I have a soft spot for this jam - it was one of the first songs I downloaded back around 2000 or so when mp3s were first becoming widespread on the internet. I seem to recall it used to take like half an hour to download one 3-5 megabyte song. My first mp3 player. With expansion memory, it only held about 80 songs or so, so every one of those songs would get played over and over again til I was sick of them. But even so, that was infinitely better than what came before it: the dreaded portable cd walkman, which was quite possibly the worst piece of consumer technology ever foisted on the planet. If you WALKED TOO ENERGETICALLY the thing wouldn't work. Read that over again and ask yourself how in the world something like that sold in the tens of millions. Lol what a scam. Sony and Panasonic, you deserve to die slow painful deaths for that shite.

^^That's the trouble with the TGS version -- it just makes me miss SweetS even more.

I don't doubt that TGS has improved considerably and that there's a lot of material that the can do in a way that would make me appreciate them. I actually want to hear something by TGS that makes me think Oh, yes! They're wonderful!

But not their versions of anything by SweetS. Vocally, they're pretty good, but that just lacked subtlety on all levels, not to mention taste. (I mean, it made me appreciate just how tasteful SweetS was, and I always had serious doubts about them in that regard.)

The unimaginative, semi-rock/pop arrangement didn't help (Lonesome Cherry, maybe, but not Lolita...), and there were times when the choreography looked painfully like it was lifted from this:

(An absolutely great song, and the MV is a masterpiece, but I really don't want to see a bunch of 12-year-olds cover it.)

As I say, I really want to like TGS, and I think their vocals were pretty good, but I don't think it's fair -- to them or to anyone else -- to have them do SweetS covers.)

Edit: swapped it out for a version with a better bit rate.

... and incidentally also the only release of TGS i'm familiar with
I honestly don't know much about them but none of their other works have really caught my attention yet

OK -- I liked that! XD It was good all around -- good vocals, good arrangement, good song, nice staging, and excellent color scheme.

And lots and lots of Perfume-style robo-choregraphy. XD

That's the trouble with a lot of groups -- everything's right, except that too much of the material is just kind of whatever...

That second clip was great, the kind of PV I'd like to see H!P do more of, with an imaginative element that, totally aside from the choreography, draws you back to watching it again. All those cubes reminded me of the banned "Beginner" PV a bit, although without the blood and gore of course! XD

And I wasn't that crazy about that Lolita performance either. The underlying song itself is awesome but idk. I felt that the original was a kind of (very) guilty pleasure. SweetS were flirty yet still essentially innocent, so as a viewer, there was still a safe distance between you and the jailbait. But with all strippery and grindy moves, the TGS girls don't come off as innocent at all, at least in that performance. There being no "safe distance" makes it less enjoyable.

Also those girls seem pretty generic - they don't have the star presence of an Aya or a Haruna. (Sorry Miori, you're awesome now but you didn't particularly stand out back then, lol.)

In the second PV, I kept thinking that one of the girls looked like Nagase Miyu, but I was just getting glimpses of her face. I think it must have been Mei.
