Chocolate - Awesome movie. I didn't care much for the story, but the main parts are the fighting scenes anyway. I like how they fight in very different settings; it's like different stages in a video game. It was really fun to watch.

I remember when I first saw that, I thought the scene near the end where she was fighting that bad-ass autistic dude was what a battle between you and amped would look like. XD

About Wasabi, my recollection was that it was okay, but it was basically yet another Luc Besson remake of The Professional.

^ lol I remember you showing me a clip from it, actually

Fearless - I wanted to watch the Director's Cut, but unfortunately I only had access to the shorter version. I felt it was too short; somehow I was shocked when it ended... not sure why because I should have seen it coming (based on what happens in the story). Anyway, it was excellent because it was about honor rather than just beating up bad guys, and I seriously felt like it was a Chinese version of an Icelandic saga in a way, lol. I just need to make sure to watch full versions of movies from now on the first time around.

An original 35mm print of Heathers at the Pacific Film Archive.

I'm so glad I went to see it! I've seen this movie over two dozen times, but I think the only other time I'd seen it on film was my very first time, back during its original theatrical run in 1989. It was my introduction to Winona Ryder, and I was totally in love with her by the time the movie was over.

There were striking differences in the soundtrack between this version and the VHS/DVD version I know so well. The version of "Que Sera, Sera" that plays during the opening credits is different, and sung by a different (uncredited) singer, not Syd Straw. And Big Fun's "Teenage Suicide (Don't Do It)" playing on the radio in the film version is a synthy piece that is completely different from the Don Dixon song in the video version.

^ So that's why that film crew followed me around last year. Huh.

I mistakenly watched the anime first — I didn't know about the movie then — and was utterly lost. Now, I think I can watch it again and understand it better.

I can now confirm this to be the case. Ohhh man, so much better…

Sanshiro Sugata and Sanshiro Sugata, Part Two. I'm working on seeing all of Kurosawa's films that I haven't seen yet. Twelve more in my Netflix queue, plus one (Dreams) that I haven't seen in over twenty years.

Hmmm.... I watched The Last Samurai, 13 Assassins, and Ran (all in DVD). I thought the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie was going to be shown in my country and I wanted to "get in the samurai mood". Turns out I wasted my time.

^ Seeing good samurai films is never a waste of time! Speaking of which, I need to see Miike's new one, Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai (a.k.a. Ichimei), ideally on the big screen. I missed it during the week it played in San Francisco.

It's been more movies from the 1940s for me during the past week:

Ghost Breakers (1940), a Bob Hope comedy on the Svengoolie show.
Gilda (1946), classic film noir starring Rita Hayworth.
One Wonderful Sunday (Subarashiki Nichiyōbi) (1947), continuing my Kurosawa series.

Saturday evening I'll be seeing a couple of films in the Pacific Film Archive's "Life Is Short: Nikkatsu Studios at 100" program.

Hmmm... I think I saw that movie in the bootleg stands last weekend. I'm actually fighting the urge to buy it because an original would take time. But with the disappointment I've had at RK not being shown here, I really want to see Hara-Kiri instead.

By the way, no to piracy! (am I a hypocrite or what? :P )
