[7/04] Morning Musume 50th: One・Two・Three/ The Matenrou Show

Honestly 100k changes nothing. It's great that they sold so much in the first week and that they could well sell a good number over 100k overall and i'm happy to see them sell better than any single in over 8 years. But if that is enough for us then we'll be no better off than when we just accepted 40k overall sales as normal. Relish this moment and cherish it and there is no reason to get cocky over just this. Personally i want to cheer Morning Musume on to more and greater sales. I won't be satisfied with just 100k in one week i want to see a single that sells 250k in it's first week next.

There is no ceiling to what Morning Musume can achieve we know that from the past and there is no limit to what they can achieve again but if we as fans get comfortable with 40-50k sales overall then so will management and Morning Musume themselves. And i don't think anyone wants that.

For the first show, First Generation Morning Musume。 Leader Nakazawa Yuuko-san also came along

she gave us lots of love filled words, kind words, appreciated words.
Even now, she loves the current Morning Musume。…I’m so glad she’s with us (ノ∇〃 )

Lately, I, as leader, have been a little uncertainty everyday,
listening to first generation leader Nakazawa-sa’s leadership knowledge, I ended up crying a bit (●>_<●)


But！ From Nakazawa-san,
we’ve gotten her warm, encouraging words so, I felt like alright I’ll do my best！

Honestly 100k changes nothing.

It changes something in that the pop world is not just about artistic merit, but about popularity and momentum.

It looked for a while that MM had been so thoroughly defeated by AKB that they were knocked totally out of the race, destined to lose even to also-ran groups like Momoclo and Super Girls. Even the hardcore wota were losing heart and drifting off, making MM look like historical relics, nothing more. Remember how, not long ago, many fans were worried sick that DMM was an existential threat to the future of Morning Musume? How laughable that fear seems now, in hindsight.

To me, 100K is roughly the point at which a song becomes popular enough that non-fans start to say, "Oh yeah, I've heard that before." For people like that, for whom Morning Musume basically died in 2004, this is a group which has been reborn.

In one sense though, I agree with you. 100k once is a fluke. It needs to happen again, soon. Whether or not they can repeat this level of success is what determines if this is their Oogoe Diamond or their Ashita no Sora. That is to say, is could be the beginning of a sustained era of popularity, or it could be a momentary blip in a continuing fall-off.
