The population of the city the convention is in is only 23,040. I can't imagine that there will be an insane pollution problem.
Somerset, NJ is part of the New York-to-Washington DC megalopolis that lines I-95 (also known in that area as the New Jersey Turnpike), so yeah, it's that bad. All of the industry, warehousing, and working-class housing that can't actually fit into the major cities get shoved out there along I-95. And to get to Somerset from Newark Airport — which is where you'll fly into for this convention — you must drive past a HUGE oil depot.
I'd say it's equivalent to Chiba, which is where a lot of Tokyo's industry has been located, but I don't imagine the girls spend a lot of time in Chiba.
The nicer parts of New Jersey are much farther south, between I-95 and the coast.
