My tastes hardly ever end up lining up with popularity rankings. Well, Adrenaline Dame was my favorite too, I prefer to tie all the single tracks together, but that's about it.
I like that the Western polls limit you to active members. Without that limit these things barely change year to year.

Ranking of "Idols representing Japan" chosen by 500 people (men and women)! No.3 Morning Musume, AKB48 No.2, and No.1 is Matsuda Seiko

Coming in third place was "Morning Musume."

The survey respondents commented,
"Because it was the first idol group I recognized and I think it is recognized by all generations (31-year-old male),"
"Because it was popular in elementary school and everyone knew the songs and choreography (30-year-old female),"
