Been living in my sister's house for a week + a bit now while we get our house ready to actually move into (they left it in.. a state), and we got hit with a ton more snow - which makes our work harder and means waiting even longer for cable installation. Wonderful timing for all those involved that decided moving during winter was a good idea.

The people that were in our house left used cat litter in the basement, a cat pee soaked rug, a leaking washing machine, all the baseboards were missing, they took the toilet paper holder? And a bunch of other things that need(ed) to be fixed or cleaned (pretty sure she let her kids draw all over parts of the kitchen with markers right before they left). Pictures were definitely misleading. :hehe:

Used cat litter and a cat pee soaked rug?

We hit the low-to-mid 80s yesterday. Muscle Shoals broke a record.

It's been warm in the south. Puerto Rico was fun. You get the conveniences of being technically still in part of the U.S., but obviously it's otherwise like a different country. I didn't realize how far away it was -- closer to South America than to Miami.

In other news, a recruiter contacted me about working as a Thai Siri Linguist for Apple. I can only do it part-time (remotely), which they're fine with. I'm going to be incredibly busy but I could use the extra money.

^ That 's VERY cool! :thumbs-up:

My sister's Siri speaks English, but she has it set so the voice is male with an Indian accent.

It seems like analysis of natural language/speech has come a very long way from even a few years ago - it must be very sophisticated by now. I suppose that interpreting speech is still the trickiest part - it varies so much (and people can get so sloppy when they talk XD ).

I just got home from a great show by Quasi at the Ivy Room. Who would have thought that I’d ever get to see the legendary Janet Weiss drumming on the merch table at a dinky little bar in my neighborhood? I told her how great it was to be able to see her within walking distance of my home, and that the last time I was able to do that was when her former band played the Punk Rock Prom at Gilman way back in ’97.

Funny you should say that…

So, ice storm update. We're still in Toledo. Due to a combination of factors — the overall extent of the damage, how the roads and power lines are laid out where we live, the second storm coming on Monday — the estimate for restoration of our power has been pushed back to Tuesday.

If anyone else is interested…

https://outagemap.dteenergy.com/

Switch from "Location" to "Zip Code" (in the map legend) to get a better overall view, and keep in mind this is days after the storm.

Worst ice storm in 50 years, they say. Comparable to 1978, at least with regards to damage and subsequent recovery efforts…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blizzard_of_1978

Anyhow, that's six days and five nights in Toledo, at our own expense. Plus the expense of all of the spoiled food in our refrigerator and freezer, since insurance considers this an Act of God outside the residence, rather than a proximate cause inside the residence.

Or to quote my actual policy…

Spoiler: show
Power Interruption. We will pay for accidental direct physical loss caused directly or indirectly by a change of temperature that results from power interruption that takes place on the residence premises. The power interruption must be caused by a loss insured occurring on the residence premises. The power lines off the residence premises must remain energized. This coverage does not increase the limit applying to the damaged property.

We can afford it. It's just frustrating. And I figure there will be slim pickings at the grocery stores for the next week or two as everyone else in Southeast Michigan goes through the same thing.

What's more distressing is what's happening with the person I take care of. They depend on having a steady routine, and of course that routine has been severely disrupted by this. Three nights away from home have been bad enough already, two more nights will be awful.

I'm having to do a lot of "We're more than halfway there" and "The end is in sight" happy talk just to keep both of us sane.

One bright spot is that when I got stir crazy and went exploring, I found a pretty good gaming store and a FANTASTIC comic book store right in the same strip mall…

https://www.checkmategames.net/
https://www.jcscomicsnmore.com/

Both of them are the kind of store, in their respective markets, that I haven't seen since the mid '90s. The kind that only grows over several years of being in the same location with regular customers.

Most such stores these days are just CCG play spaces that make a token effort at dressing the front with a small selection of other products. What I call "the Diamond Distributors Starter Pack" (although Diamond went bust during the lockdowns).

Under different circumstances, I could spend a lot of time at these stores. Especially the comic book store. It must be seen to be believed. I figure it's just hanging on by a thread, one old guy keeping the lights on. I talked to him for a few minutes, he's been doing it for 37 years and you can see he's reaching his limit.

Under different circumstances… <sigh>

Late Sunday night update: the power has been restored after all, by the original estimate (barely). I've asked the apartment manager (who's still on site) for independent confirmation, because it's major undertaking to pack up and move the person I take care of. But I think (hope) the power company's reporting tools can be believed.

If it's confirmed, we'll go home tomorrow (Monday) afternoon. We'll have to drive through the rain, but it's better than staying another (fifth) night.

Safe home! Hopefully your incapacitated person didn't suffer too much from having their routine disrupted. Also I know you were bummed about all your food spoiling but I'm wondering if the ambient temperature in your unit remained cold while the power was out, that maybe some of the food didn't spoil after all?

Monday afternoon update: we're home. It's raining hard, including some freezing rain this morning, but the temperature is steadily increasing so it shouldn't build up like it did last week.

Now we get to look forward to 6 inches of snow on Friday.
