I access the pages more than anyone else, so I have to constantly load 10 billion embedded youtube links in one page over and over, even in the post preview screen it loads. I don't use mobile, I don't use chrome. My PC is not fast at all. I can see images quickly on Edge. I can barely play embedded videos because there are 10 of them posted on one page with images. I used the embeds because there was no other option, so I deal with the painfulness of waiting. The embedded thumbnails just makes it a breeze to access the page for me and post something quickly.

I have the problem with large amounts of data from pictures and videos slowing me down. My home wifi isn’t the greatest and I live in a dead zone so loading sometimes is an issue, especially if my wifi drops. I just never really complain about it because why complain about a good thing? Would putting videos and pictures under a spoiler box help curb the data munch? Especially if you plan on putting more than a few in a post.

Spoilers don't prevent the data from loading, they just conceal the contents, so they wouldn't be helpful for that.

You do not understand. I use Chrome only to go to Google sites and only when I need to. I do not go to any Google sites while I use Safari, and I block Google's tracking on all other non-Google sites. It's a deliberate choice, not a whim of autolaunching apps. When I post YouTube videos here, I copy the links from Chrome and then paste them to Safari.

That's not really the point, though. The point is that deprecating the embedded player makes this site less useful and sends people to another site.

I'm getting older, my responsibilities and interests are changing, and my interest in Hello! Project has been waning. But I still come to this site every day, out of habit if nothing else. I don't care about auditions or tour schedules or set lists or sales rankings or the trivial details of eight different editions of every CD release. I just want to watch some videos, because H!P's appeal is fundamentally audio-visual. And while I'm here, I try to post a few videos as well, because I want to do my part to make the site useful. Y'know, whatever scraps that Amped overlooks, or fun little bits that I've found on my own…

But if the embedded player is deprecated to the point where I'm the only one who still uses it in posts, and I have to go back to the YouTube site to watch any other video posted here, then why should I come to this site in the first place?

Gotcha. I should have realized, but I didn't put two and two together. "Flew over my head", as they say.

I appreciate the feedback so far. My personal impression so far is that for me the thumbnails are a bit of an annoyance. I have videos set on my browser to never autoplay, so there's an extra click involved to click over to Youtube and then click again to play the video. As far as annoyances go, not a big boulder or anything, but more like a tiny rock in my shoe. Plus I can't really tell the difference between a video and just a photo that someone's posting. I think it could cause someone (me anyway) to not even realize that a video has been posted in the first place. And I appreciate Celedam's point about getting forced to view commercials. And N-K's point about YouTube itself being bothersome. And I didn't realize that people were having trouble with pages loading quick enough (more than I realized). To that end I've just reduced the number of posts per page from 20 back down to 10. That might be enough by itself to alleviate the problem.

I'll keep this going for a little while longer to see if people become more acclimated, but frankly it's not looking like a win; I'm not a fan of adding board features which are helpful to a few but end up degrading the user experience of a substantial number of people.

This is likely beyond phpbb's abilities, but might it be possible to make a low-impact mobile skin that interprets [y] as thumbnails instead of embeds?

A good idea. As long as all 10 posts aren't YouTube videos in a row. 20 In row, a nightmare.

Got it on the fifth one! That one was difficult mainly bc I wasn't expecting that sort of grammatical option to be available
