All About Eve (1950) — I hadn't seen this since the 1990s, the Oscar winner for Best Picture of 1950 and an all-around classic. Bette Davis is Margo Channing, a grande dame of the theater, and Anne Baxter is Eve Harrington, a "mousy" young woman who aims to take her place. George Sanders is particularly memorable as acid-tongued theater critic Addison DeWitt, and a ninth-billed, up-and-coming actress named Marilyn Monroe is a joy as a ditzy but ambitious starlet.

The Mummy (1959) — A remake of the Universal horror classic, starring Hammer Films' top horror stars, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

I saw Old today. It was a rather grim undertaking, not very many moments of enjoyment. Some of the reviews I read complained about the stilted dialog, but that didn't bother me much. Sort of reminded me of Hitchcock in the way that the purpose of the script wasn't to establish realism but to set up the gimmick as expeditiously as possible, and I think to that extent Shyamalan succeeded. I just think he forgot to make the audience care about any of the characters enough to endure sitting through their travails.

Watched The French Connection on Tuesday night. I was a little underwhelmed, lol. Idk if it's cause I was tired but I just didn't find it very exciting.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) — Loaded with stuff that I love to see in movies, from Chinese martial arts fantasy to the crazy streets of San Francisco.

^ It had some really outstanding action sequences. However the middle did drag a bit, and as in most Marvel titles there were times in the final boss fight where the CG got a bit numbing. Simu Liu did ok considering he was imo the weakest link of Kim's Convenience. I think it's fair to say, though, that there's still room for him to grow as a charismatic actor.

I liked the beginning, and the fight scenes on the bus and in the building in Macau were great. However, when it was mostly dragons fighting at the end it got weaker. The story was also kinda blah to me, but I'm not a fan of Marvel movies in general. Just went with a group of friends.

Even though I do like dragons, I'd have to agree with that.

The Nowhere Inn (2020) — Annie Clark (a.k.a. St. Vincent) wants to make a documentary film of her current tour, and she gets her best friend, Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney, Portlandia), to direct it. Annie's boring private life is making it difficult for Carrie to make an interesting film, but when Annie decides to adopt more of a "rock star" persona offstage, things start to get really weird.

It's a very funny mockumentary.

Two more movie theaters in my area reopened on Friday, including the one closest to my home. All the open theaters are requiring masks and proof of full vaccination. Of the theaters that I frequented before the lockdown, only one remains closed, but it belongs to the same chain as an open, ten-screen theater less than a block away.

I finally saw my first movie back in theaters.

The Rescue

It's a National Geographic documentary about how divers rescue the Thai kids soccer team out of that cave a few years ago. There were a lot of people involved who were strong and worked together as a team.

What was the crowd like? Most of the movies I've seen have been nearly empty.
