We got such much needed thunderstorms last night so the heat finally broke. Though it looks like it might start creeping up again soon.

I just hope the week I go on vacation at the end of July, that I have decent weather but not, living in an ass cheek hot weather.

Curious about this (I'm in the dark on it). Can you help with answer?

If you have a Blu-ray player purchased for Region A, it can only play Region A Blu-ray discs. What about DVDs coded for Japan’s DVD region? Will those kinds of DVDs play on a Region A Blu-ray player?

From what I've experienced with my own Blu-ray player, a region 2 DVD will not play on a region A BD player.

Blu-ray regions are A, B, C. US and Japan are both Region A for Blu-rays.

DVDs are region numbers. US is Region 1 for DVDs. Japan is Region 2 for DVDs.

So you can't play Region 2 DVDs on a Region A Blu-ray player. They are not the same.

When you make your Blu-ray player region free, you can play any DVD or Blu-ray from any region.

You can make any Blu-ray or DVD player Region free by entering a simple "Region code" unlock specific to that player using your remote. You can google your Blu-ray model number, brand, and the region free code instructions.

To expand slightly on what Moh and Amped are saying, the blu-ray region coding and DVD region coding are independently set. If you look at the back panel of your player you'll see a plate that looks like the following:

Image

As you can see it has a 1 on the top for the DVD region and an A on the bottom for the Blu Ray region. So IF by chance you have a Blu Ray player that has a [2 / A] designation, then it would play region 2 DVDs and region A Blu Rays. But players sold in the US will typically have a [1 / A] designation. As Amped pointed out there's a good chance that a cheat code will unlock that but not always. If you don't mind me asking, which movie are you trying to play? :fear:

I don't have a blu-ray player, or even a high def TV yet. My ancient LG 22" TV receives high-def cable excellently. I have a multi-region DVD player that I use for the Japanese DVD videos. I've noticed that a lot of stuff coming from Japan now is only in blu-ray format. I'm sitting on about $900.00 of Best Buy gift cards, but I love my old TV too. I've been waiting for it to breakdown for a long time now. It probably never will. So I'm screwed because I don't need more than one TV either.

Oh in that case as Amped pointed out, if you buy a Blu Ray player in the US it will also play Japanese Blu Rays. If you want it to also play region 2 then maybe check the model online before your purchase to see if it is one that is amenable to region unlocking. I did a bit of poking around and on the Best Buy site there are a couple of cheap players. From what I've read I doubt the Sony players are actually unlockable, but possibly the LGs are. One possible option is to get an external Blu Ray player for your laptop or internet player for a tower desktop. I can't confirm but I have read that if you load up a DVD on a PC/laptop player, and play it through VLC, that VLC will completely ignore the region setting.

I did the VLC test on my table top and it played a Japanese DVD. Nice to know. :notworthy: I'm watching a DVD of LoVendor on my computer as we speak! I better see if a regular DVD will work now.

Yipes, it changed the region code to 2.

I don't know for sure about that. I may have had it already set to 2 because I have another external DVD which is a 1.

I wouldn't screw with your computers! :D

EDIT:
When I tried reading a region 1 DVD on the region 2 DVD drive using VLC it wanted to change the drive code to 1. I think you are only allowed to change a drive code 5 times then you can't anymore. :x

This is the inexpensive multi-region Blu-ray/DVD player that I bought seven years ago, when my old multi-region DVD player gave up the ghost, and it's served me well. You can even connect it with RCA jacks if you have an old-school TV without HDMI connectivity.

It plays any region DVD right off the bat, but you have to enter a code to change the Blu-ray region. I switched it over to Region B last week to watch a couple of U.K. releases, then switched it back to Region A to watch a domestic Blu-ray of Baby Driver.

There have been very few discs that it won't play: a bootleg DVD-R here, an ancient VCD there. (It plays most VCDs.) In seven years of regular use, I can count the problem discs on the fingers of one hand. I recently had trouble with a borrowed Region B Blu-ray that kept on giving me the "This Blu-ray will only play in a Region B player" message, even after I switched the machine over to Region B. Maybe that's because I put it in when the player was still set to Region A, and that got stuck in its memory. That's the first time I've had any sort of problem playing a Region B Blu-ray, but it's a non-issue if you're only playing American and Japanese Region A Blu-rays.

Back before I had a multi-region DVD player for my TV (15 or 16 years ago), I switched my MacBook over to Region 2 for Japanese stuff, but I just kept it there, since Apple only allows a limited number of region switches.
