It was an enjoyable popcorn movie. I was pleasantly surprised by an appearance by Yakushimaru Hiroko (Sailor Suit and Machine Gun) and end credit theme music by Utada Hikaru.

It brought back some nice memories of my two visits to Kamakura, too. I'm disappointed that I never got to see any kappa or other yōkai when I was there, though.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) — More CGI kaijū smash-ups in the latest addition to the American Godzilla series. It's okay, but nothing to write home about. Kyle Chandler and Millie Bobby Brown return from the previous film, and Kaylee Hottle, the little girl who is Kong's friend, is adorable. Yaguchi's ex-boyfriend, Oguri Shun, is also in the cast.

Bloody Chainsaw Girl (血まみれスケバンチェーンソー) (2016) — Not to be confused with The Machine Girl (片腕マシンガール) from 2008, but similarly over-the-top. One short line of dialogue encapsulates the film perfectly. After a cyborg cheerleader fires a missile from her crotch, her seifuku-wearing, chainsaw-wielding opponent says: ここ日本だぞ!

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street (2021) — Excellent and informative documentary about the making of this great educational experiment. Like most of you, I grew up watching Sesame Street (I was three years old when it premiered), so there was plenty of nostalgia here: happy, sad, and hilarious. Lots of great behind-the-scenes footage and bloopers, too, including some great bits with my hero, Oscar the Grouch.

Growing up my grandmother use to tell me she knew big bird. I guess Caroll Spinney‘a father use to work with my grandfather and that’s how the connection was made. I’m not sure how well they knew each other, my grandfather passed away in the early 90s so I never really had a chance to ask him since I was still a kid and you don’t think to ask stuff like that. But it was always a fun little story my grandmother would tell me.

That is so cool. Especially because Caroll Spinney was not only Big Bird, but Oscar, as well. :)

It's sad that he didn't get to enjoy his retirement for very long.
