If you don’t use English much, it might never occur to you. To them it’s “Nippon” or “Nihon”. Just like it’s “Deutschland” to Germans, “Bharat” to Indians, and so on. “Japan” (or “Japon”) is just a sloppy transliteration that Marco Polo scribbled in his journal because he heard about the island during his travels but never actually visited it.
For that matter, how many people know what .com, .net, and .org stand for and why? I bet if you did a “man on the street” at least 30% of the respondents would guess that .com means “communication”.
