I just saved a bird that somehow got itself stuck upside down and sideways in our bird feeder. Not even a thank you from the lil guy!

In this social media world we take pictures first before taking action. But me, I just seem to take action first and think later about stuff like that. I guess I’m a dying breed.

I think it was because you hadn't posted here since the weather event.

Okay, but I am a 3 1/2 hours drive from the east coast and on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains, so it would take a very severe storm on the east coast to affect me.

Last night I dreamt in French for the first time ever. A French guy was trying to find something (I don't remember what), and I was using my broken French to direct him to three stores that might have it.

I've also dreamt in Japanese and German in the past. Also once in Middle High German, i.e. the language spoken in southern Germany and Austria some 700 years ago. Or it could have just been modern German with Middle High German pronunciation.

My random thought of the day…

In my experience so far, grocery delivery services leave a lot to be desired.

My first time, the person who did the shopping did a bad job of bagging the items. I mean ridiculously bad. But in the end it was just annoying and a waste of plastic.

My second time, however, the person made unauthorized substitutions (brand, size, variety) for about a third of the items on my rather extensive list. I'm going to be charitable and assume that they weren't simply careless, that they thought they did me a favor by fulfilling the spirit of my list (so to speak) during a time of supply disruptions. Nevertheless, I did not get what I ordered, I now I have two pounds of turkey lunchmeat that is dated to expire in less than a week, and I have to go shopping again — which is what I'm trying to avoid, which is why I used a service in the first place — to actually finish the job and get what I want.

(as the saying goes, if you want it done right…)

Even worse, the tip-and-rate mechanism for this service has no way to leave comments, so I cannot communicate exactly why I'm giving the person a 3-star rating and… well, I haven't yet decided about the tip.

^ which app/service did you use?

I haven't ordered stuff online in a while because I've been using Imperfect Foods and just live with eating with whatever options I get from there, but I was using Instacart a while back, and they're pretty good with allowing you to customize your substitution options.

I like ordering from Whole Foods via Amazon Prime Now more, and substitution is more annoying there because they'd just offer something random and ask if you'd accept it. However, I've just messaged the shopper a few times, and even when they didn't communicate back to me they'd actually get what I wanted for me without extra cost. Once I was ordering a small bottle of generic vanilla extract, and they tried to replace it with mint extract  so of course I refused the replacement and messaged them to get some other vanilla extract instead, and I got a $20-bottle of nice vanilla extract for free.

Shipt, which is owned by Target but apparently has a contract with Meijer, the regional superstore chain that I prefer.

But I just found out today while poking around on the Meijer website — and as far as I can tell, it literally just happened between yesterday and today — that the contract has changed and now Meijer's own personnel will handle the in-store shopping and curbside pickups. And Meijer's policy going forward appears to be no substitutions and no tips, so… that's an improvement. (Shipt drivers are still delivering from store to home.)

The point of all of this is that I'm fed up with masks and I'm avoiding places that require them. I used to enjoy shopping for groceries and had many little rituals built into it, but not anymore. Not under the current circumstances. I make more than enough money to pay someone else to walk through a store for me, so to hell with it. I just wish the Meijer website more accurately reflected the in-store inventory, so that I wouldn't have to worry about getting what I order.
