DOCTOR STRANGE (2016)
Nayoko-Kihara wrote:After two movie channel preview weekends and one Redbox run during my sister's visit, I have watched a lot of mediocre movies. I don't have much to say about most of them.
Doctor Strange ★★★
Not as boring as I expected, but I don't want to see it again. I still don't like Cumberbatch.

I have to agree. A good doctor but a real a-hole, and stupid to boot. Who drives like that on a mountain road and takes their eyes off the road?
I liked the Ancient One better than the a-hole doctor. Doctor Strange 2 (2021) coming out next year.

The special effects are out of this world but not enough for me to watch it again. I'd rather watch BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA another time! XD

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has moved its Terror Tuesday and Weird Wednesday programming online, so today I checked out Centipede Horror, a crazy, Category III (adults only), Hong Kong horror film from 1982.

Trailer (not for the squeamish):

I rented Snowpiercer from my library.

Could have been a lot of better with ending. The train's room layout didn't make any sense.

Snowpiercer isn't one of my favorite Bong Joon-ho movies. Even after the release of Parasite, The Host is still at the top of my list. I also really like his first feature, Barking Dogs Never Bite.

How is your library doing movies in this shelter-in-place era, Amped? The libraries around here are all closed, of course, but I can (and do) use kanopy and hoopla to stream movies for free with my library card.

I've also been streaming a lot of movies on tubi in the past few months — also free, but no library card required.

Speaking of Snowpiercer, they are making a series about it on TNT. Set to premiere in May.

My sister works at the local library, so she was able to help me rent some old DVDs before the shutdown. You can rent as many DVDs without late fees.

She was working there because San Bernardino City Hall refused to listen to warnings and let them take any day off during this crisis. The reason is because they wanted to provide educational stuff for kids that didn't have school. They were finally closed off to customers until now though. Ridiculous.

I heard about Kanopy using our library card as well. I haven't actually used it.\

If it doesn't have Bong Joon-ho, I probably won't watch it.

^ Kanopy doesn't appear to have any Bong Joon-ho, but YouTube has The Host for free:

Yamagata Scream (山形スクリーム) (2009) — The demolition of a local shrine resurrects Heike warriors who wreak havoc on a mountain village in this slapstick horror-comedy, written by Akimoto Yasushi (yes, Aki-P) and directed by Takenaka Naoto (you've seen him before; it's this guy), who also plays Yamazaki, one of the revived samurai. Narumi Riko stars as the schoolgirl protagonist, and the cast also includes Crystal Kay as her stepmother and Irie Saaya as one of the other schoolgirls (the bespectacled tech wiz). Shinohara Tomoe shows up, too.
