Billboard Japan / SoundScan Japan 1st Quarter 2020 singles sales breakdown (December 30, 2019 ~ March 29, 2020)

Billboard : "Single unit sales in the first quarter of 2020 were 10,908,017 units, compared to 10,490,003 units in the first quarter of 2019. The top ten works are all works of idol groups."

"Many artists did not release singles during the three month elephant period, but it is clear that a limited number of artists are selling a significant percentage of single sales. And that trend is more pronounced in 2020 than in 2019. In the digital domain, such as streaming, it has long been said that some of the leading artists occupy the majority of sales, but we can see that the same has happened with single CDs.

However, the situation may change again in the future. Most of the artists who have made big sales are increasing their sales at handshake events. Now that handshake and high-touch events are no longer measures that can be performed at any time, it is obvious that artists who had increased their sales had to change their tactics. We hope that the virus outbreak will end as soon as possible, while keeping an eye on the further evolution of the artists we can meet."
