Speaking of "badass Mary Elizabeth Winstead," there was some of that in the movie I saw today: Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Her character was badass tempered with a bit of awkward. XD

Detective Pikachu (2019) ★★★
If I ever watch this again, I'm turning it off early. I was enjoying it a lot up until the reveal at the end. Put a little bit of a damper on my level of happy.

Seventh Son (2014) ★
I wanted to give this a shot since I just finished the book series it was based on (enjoyed that quite a bit), but was a pile of garbage I ended up checking out of after about 10-15 minutes. I might've watched for a while longer if whatever was going on with Jeff Bridges face hadn't been so damn distracting, and if just one character had seemed relatable to their book counterpart in more than just name (it's impressive how quickly they managed to make a mess of them).

Seriously though, what was wrong with his face.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) ★★★
I liked this. Beyond his name and general existence I knew basically nothing about Mysterio going in, so that was an added layer of fun.

Parasite (기생충) again, in honor of its Oscar victories. :yahoo:

Reigo: King of the Sea Monsters (深海獣レイゴー) (2005) — The battleship Yamato is attacked by an undersea kaijū during World War II in this indie film with bargain basement special effects. I found it kinda boring for the most part, but one thing made me laugh. An American sailor, who is rescued and taken prisoner, identifies himself as Lieutenant Commander (Kaigun-shōsa) Norman Melville, but he looks Japanese and speaks Japanese better than he does English. And the chevrons on the sleeve of his dungaree shirt indicate that he's a Petty Officer First Class.

H!P connection: One of the main characters, Ensign Kaidō Takeshi, is played by Tsuji-chan's hubby-to-be, Sugiura Taiyō.

The King's Letters (나랏말싸미) (2019) — 15th-century King Sejong of Joseon (played by Parasite's Song Kang-ho) enlists the aid of Buddhist monks to create an easy-to-learn alphabet for his people in this excellent historical drama. Some people might find it slow and boring, but the subject matter was right up my alley.

An Eye for an Eye (a.k.a. Psychopath) — The host of a children's puppet show murders abusive parents in this low-budget curiosity from 1973.

For the past 30 years or so, I've been using the list of 265 "Favorite Films" in Re/Search #10: Incredibly Strange Films as a checklist of must-see movies. I've recently been cranking up my efforts to track down and see all the films on the list, and this was my 21st so far this year.

247 down, 18 to go.

Onward (2020) — Disney/Pixar's latest is an absolutely delightful spin on the epic fantasy quest. Even little background details had me laughing out loud, like the cans of Mountain Doom soda and the carton of Auðumla Farms milk.

I'm wondering whether the writers might have drawn inspiration from this sentence in The Lord of the Rings: "Aragorn and Legolas went now with Éomer in the van."

Black Christmas, a.k.a. Silent Night, Evil Night (1974) — A very good psycho-killer-in-a-sorority-house film, starring Olivia Hussey , Keir Dullea, and Margot Kidder.

Jaws in Japan, a.k.a. Psycho Shark (2009) — You're gonna need a bigger boat... to hold the huge pile of crap that this movie is. Japanese girls in bikinis can't even save it.

Running on Empty (2010) — Azami (AV star and Ebisu Muscats member Mihiro) wants to break up with her loser musician boyfriend, but first she has to implement a scheme to get him to pay back a large sum of money that he owes her. Quite funny at times, the story takes some unexpected turns.
