I'm starting to think a snake plant is more trouble than it's worth. It grows ridiculously tall, relative to its roots, so it ends up top-heavy. And that makes it prone to tipping over and uprooting itself.

Now I learn that I'm supposed to repot it every year in order to avoid this. I live in an apartment, so repotting means spreading out a tarp on my floor. I don't have a tarp. I could get a new shower curtain and then use the old one as a tarp, but that seems unnecessarily wasteful.

Sigh.

Nevertheless, a snake plant is perfect for apartment living: it requires very little water or light, and it actually cleans formaldehyde from the air. (Trace amounts of formaldehyde are released into the air by the cheap materials often used in apartment construction.)

12:00 noon on the first Saturday of the month… time to test the outdoor warning sirens!

Listen for them in your own area, as noon approaches in your time zone.

I finally moved into my own apartment a few days ago. I love my neighborhood a lot, but I’m looking forward to settling in completely... waiting for my things to get delivered to me and internet to get set up and all. Been sleeping on an air mattress. :/

I also start training at my school for the year this coming Monday. I’ve had time off from classes and teaching for most of this week but I have 30 hours of freelance work to do.

From last November…

I'm not into coffee at all, but I agree that the dark chocolate Swiss Miss Simply packets are delicious.

Yup, those are the ones…

As far as I can tell, Swiss Miss Simply Cocoa is being either repositioned as a boutique product or discontinued altogether. Most stores in my area no longer stock it, and the few that do have doubled the price on it. So if you like it like I do, get it while you can.

Apparently it has been replaced by a "dark chocolate" version of the regular product — and by "regular product" I mean the usual crap made with corn syrup solids, coconut oil, emulsifiers, preservatives… In other words, all the stuff that makes prepackaged hot cocoa mix taste artificial. Because it is.

Duck-related content:

The latest post at Janelle Shane's Ai Weirdness blog is about strange names for English junk-food snacks (she got the talktotransformer online neural net to generate some that were even sillier than the real snack names, such as "Dogs with Eyes on Them, "Grapefruit Sushi in a Jar", and "Grey Sea Dipping Slugs"), but in the bonus material, the net seems to be obsessed with ducks:

Spoiler: show
These could be kind of plausible duck-related snacks:
Duckspuds
Ducks with Lumps on Top
Duckies with Silly Biscuits
Double-decker Ducky Doughnuts

But then it got off onto some rather questionable non-duck snack items:
Doody Duffel Biscuits
French Nipple Waders
Double Dicks
Impressive Trousers

And it finished the list with a couple of sort-of-actual-seeming but slightly disturbing theoretical (and obviously non-snack) ducks:
Earhuggers (also known as "Checks"), a breed of duck that can reach heights of 6'1" (2m).
Fern-eyed Energetic Electric Green, a type of red-eyed duck.

:fear:
