I love my new phone. It’s bigger than my previous phone and the battery life is a nice bonus. I thought about getting away from the Apple phones but then I had consider my apps. That kind of killed the idea. Half my apps would have been dead on transfer. One day, maybe I’ll break out of my Apple prison. But that day is not today!

I got the Xr. It is the cheapest of the new X’s and should last me a few generations. My old phone was a 6S.

Still getting use to the fact I no longer have a home button. I spent the day updating my outdated password cache. That was fun. (Not)

My SE was due for an upgrade just this week and I ended up choosing the 8 partly for that.
Touch ID is not something I'd personally be willing to part with just yet. It's become muscle memory at this point.
The 8 is also about as big as I would want my smartphone to ever be (I chose the SE back then mainly for it's smaller form factor). I can still use it one handed.
Plus no notch.

Rather than upgrade, I just bought another SE when they were on clearance sale a couple months ago.

I really didn’t even need to do that; the only things wrong with my old SE were somewhat diminished battery capacity, slightly wobbly volume buttons (my fault), and an almost invisible scuff on the screen. But that last chance to buy a new, unlocked SE direct from Apple (so I knew it was legit) was too good to pass up.

After trading in my old SE, the new one cost about $300. (Just replacing the battery in my old SE would have cost $50.) It should last me another three years or more, and the only thing I really have to worry about is having it dropped from the list of supported devices in a future version of iOS. Still better than paying $1200 for an XS that includes a bunch of extra crap I don’t want or need.

(i don’t like Tim Cook’s Apple. i could rant for hours, so i’ll just cite the best example of what i mean: you can’t use the headphones that come with the latest iPhones on any of the latest Macs. think about it.)

I am going to miss my headphone jack. My Suu-San headphones are the best. But I still have an iPod so if I want to listen to music I can just use that.

I loath Tim Cook. Which is why I was trying to graduate out of the Apple field but the timing just wasn’t right. My screen breaking just kind of put me over the edge sooner than I wanted. I am going to attempt to cut my app usage to stuff that’s more cross platform so when the time comes I can bail without feeling I’m still attached to an Apple leash. And then the whole iCloud. That’s another can of worms I wasn’t ready to open just yet. My computer is in serious need of an overhaul but I just haven’t had the time or energy to do anything about it.

I am going to attempt to cut my app usage to stuff that’s more cross platform so when the time comes I can bail without feeling I’m still attached to an Apple leash. And then the whole iCloud. That’s another can of worms I wasn’t ready to open just yet.

I expect to get another 2–3 years out of the MacBook Pro that I have now — the last of the Retina models from 2015, which I bought at the end of 2016 before it went away too. But if Apple keeps going the way it has been, I think it and my new iPhone SE will be the last Apple products I own. I use Windows 10 every day for work, and I'm comfortable with it being my desktop OS at home. I'm not so sure about getting an Android phone, however. It's weird: I trust Apple but I don't like it right now, while conversely I like Google but I don't trust it.

I'm not even addressing the other elephant in the room over there, namely "It's a perfectly phonetic language (zero exceptions)." What does that even mean?

Lol, that really doesn’t mean anything. Writing transcribes phonemes rather than phones in a language because that is what’s mentally real to native speakers, so you’re almost going to see any sort of writing or spelling system that is “perfectly phonetic.” I mean, one could make up these systems, like writing everything in IPA with as many diacritics as possible, but it’s going to be unnatural for speakers and basically just slow down the acquisition of literacy.

Oh that was tempting believe me. I love that formfactor and the aesthetic.
I myself went from 5 to 5S to SE. The Lightning port on my SE was getting worse every day (every time I had to charge it became a ever longer ritual of wiggling the cable just right to get it to take).

As you can imagine the one thing I absolutely love about the 8 is the QI inductive charging. You just pop it on that little charging pad and it works.
