National/racism aside, I can also see parents being a little "uhhh" when you say you want to buy a Japanese single that costs as much as an entire American album. The exchange rate it absolutely atrocious right now. When I started it was ~$8 plus shipping for a single, which isn't SO bad. At this point we're up to $13. That's sick.

I've never had an issue with my love for Japanese music, really. Maybe because it's very common for Mexican people to listen to music in English, which they don't even understand in a lot of cases. My mother is really into Italian music and it's pretty much normal around here.

There is a stigma for people who are big anime fans, though, but since I don't watch anime I haven't experienced it. Video game fans don't have that problem, it is perceived as nerdy I guess but it's not a big deal

On the other hand, supporting any country that isn't Mexico during the World Cup can be a problem XD Mexico loves soccer almost as much as it sucks at it.

My Dad Works in a Japanese bank, so he kinda got used to it after awhile (him being exposed to the culture everyday and all)..But definitely had a little conflicting thoughts just like Celedam's father from that era. I guess they thought a different way back then and it carried out now. But i guess his job made him subject to change sooner or later XD? But yeah i had to use his card if i wanted Jpop things, but i use my own now *-* <3 Everyone in my family still gives me "The Look" When i blast Musume though

With my family, it's never been a cultural issue, probably because in Thailand Japanese culture is far more present, at least to a certain level throughout.

The problem was that piracy is common in Thailand, so my dad has absolutely no problem with downloading music for free (or buying cheap pirated DVDs) so he'd criticize the materialism of buying expensive Japanese CDs. With my mom/stepdad it used to be that they don't trust buying online or anything that involves giving out credit card info in general.

I'm not sure because I haven't been there since 2007. I remember some stores downtown (i.e. not close to my house) where they sold imported stuff. Anyway, I've had enough of my own money for these things for a few years now, so yay. Not that I get a ton of stuff. I mean, eventually you get old enough.

I want my CDs to get here >.>. Ai's song is stuck in my head since watching the video recently posted.

There's no way I could have afforded expensive Japanese imports when I was a teenager or even an undergrad, certainly not on a regular or even semi-regular basis. I started buying Japanese punk/pop/rock when I was in my early 20s, but I almost never bought any new Japanese imports until I was in my late 30s. Shonen Knife was about the only exception.

So Aichan's in good company.

Hey Erilaz, have you heard Tsunku's The Beatles cover album? His version of Help! is particularly hilarious XD.
