This is always true and the BEST CASE for this is Maachan. She wasn't really a favorite, in fact she was mostly forgettable. People were clearly way more attached to Ayumi, Haruka, Harunan, and Sara. I think Meru had a bit of a supporter base too?. Maachan was a huge surprise when she was chosen but no one is even questioning why she got in now.
^ THIS. This is why I loved the audition footage and thanks for reminding me because I didn't even consider it when I made my last post. The girls who show the most growth do tend to pass the audition. This is why I was one of the few who loved Maachan during the audition. If I saw that in Ogata during the audition I may have ended up rooting for her. And my opinions of the other girls could have been different as well.
I just wouldn't be so fond if she made it into Musume because i know she'd just end up background fodder
