It's a song from a guy's pov. Which you realize by reading the Japanese lyrics where Tsunku uses the male version of "I" ("boku") and not the unisex/general "watashi".

But despite that though. While I get what you mean, in English it really does sound that way. In Japanese? It really doesn't sound too romantic at all. The guy is obviously interested in her but it's really not "all out there" either.

And yes I know that some people; Hamasaki Ayumi for example, writes 'boku' in all her songs etc and that it doesn't have to be male. But that's not very likely in this case, seeing as Tsunku has (most likely) never done it that way before, though he has written songs from a guy's pov before, and "boku" is a male term that men use.

There is a drama trope called a "bokukko" where a girl will refer to herself with boku.

It's not hate that you'll get. It's just that you have to keep in mind that it is written by someone who is not a native speaker and doesn't understand the conontation. If this song had come out in America I would agree with you 100%. Japan is very silent on gay related things. It's highly unlikely for it to be covered in a song and even more unlikely that an idol group would sing it.

So if you really want to interpret the lyrics that way keep in mind it's accidental rather than intentional.

Ayumi Hamasaki actually does it intentionally as a lampshade on the fact that for some reason Boku is for males only. She did an interview about it once and it was her way of rebelling against the system or something. So it's not really the same situation. This just sounds like it was written as "boku" and the English person just translated it as being from a males point of view.
