I will admit without the slightest hesitation to having (and cultivating, as if that were even necessary) a thoroughgoing case of the kind of collector's mentality that says, "Well, I don't really own it until I have a copy of the official release on CD, DVD, VHS, vinyl, shellac, Edison wax cylinder, or whatever." (Although I'm pragmatic enough to be OK with a used copy in crappy condition, as long as I have some version of it in good quality that plays.)

I think that's just for the previews, to save bandwidth. The previews of movies and TV episodes are just as bad.

But there's no way to know for sure without purchasing one, of course.

Although my habit of bargain-hunting, buying used items (and being OK with downloads from wherever in the meantime) probably makes me a considerably less-than-ideal collector from their point of view.

If I lived in the same city as a Book-Off I'd probably never buy a for sale CD ever again in my life. When I went to Japan I made sure to stock up on as many used CDs as I could find. I ended up ditching all the jewel cases and just bringing home tine CDs and the paper and then taking a ton of empty jewel cases at work and replaces every single of one them. The only ones it failed on were the Single Regular edition with the non-standard CD case. But the others, they are so good it doesn't look like I replaced the jewel covers. xD

Morning Musume are the only group I buy every single for. Other groups I tend to only buy them if I like them or I wait till I can find them dirt cheap bordering on free. It's not hard with idol CDs.

With how many DVDs I have collected over the years I can't say I've ever really watched any of them. xD I'm a horrible fan like that. But the one time I did, I used my region free DVD player and the whole video screwed up. I ended up playing it on my computer for better quality. I wonder if I could do that now though? Ever since I my computer got rebooted. Video quality hasn't been the best. I'm working on borrowed time to be honest. I haven't even put my music back on my computer yet and it's been over 2 months.

I did the same thing, and was really excited for the Ai wa Itsumo PV.
Not only was it the Promotion Edit (not even the real MV), it was also horrendous quality. >.<

Amped: There's a difference between lyric translations that are professionally done and ones done by fans. And I mentioned that I don't expect them to be perfect, but there are so many errors that it's a problem. Also, you do realise they have way more than a week to put the translation together, right? They could, you know, start working on it after the recording's done and they have the official lyrics. But they all feel rushed and if though they're done in a day.

Waterfowl is correct in context, though. It refers to ducks, geese and swans. In this case it's a bit of a weird lyric -- I think they're going for the "like water off a duck's back" metaphor, but who knows. It's the closest thing I can come up with lol.

Eh, I'd say a lot of the time they don't even do that. There are so many nuances and whatnot that they miss. Shit, in the Nen ni wa Nen MV they straight up mistranslated 不安. It refers to feeling anxious, not feeling depressed.

and any level of translation is a vast improvement in that.

Even if the translation gives a wrong impression of what they're singing about? (Not trying to be smart here, I'm genuinely interested.)

I also agree about the hardsubs thing. I know why they're there, but they're really distracting. I like having lyrics myself, and I also like MVs in higher quality, but they make it hard to focus on the actual MV. Especially when they're terrible and I'm more focused on being annoyed at the subs than I am at enjoying the MV itself .
