I just got home from the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library's annual book sale, where I exercised an enormous amount of self-control and only bought nine books at 50¢ apiece:

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin A. Abbott;
Seaward, by Susan Cooper;
The Very Bloody History of Britain (Without the Boring Bits), by John Farman;
Pu der Bär, by A. A. Milne (Harry Rowohlt's German translation of Winnie-the-Pooh);
Modern Chinese: A Basic Course, by the Faculty of Peking University;
Japan: Past and Present, by Edwin O. Reischauer (3rd edition);
JTB Japan in Your Pocket! Vol. 4: Illustrated Festivals of Japan;
JTB Japan in Your Pocket! Vol. 5: Illustrated Must-See in Kyoto;

and the day's most interesting find:

War Department Technical Manual TM 30-541: Japanese Military Dictionary: Japanese-English English-Japanese, published in Washington, D.C. by the War Department, 29 August 1944.

In case you haven't heard yet, they're coming back to J-Pop Summit this year! :D It's not clear whether they'll be doing a musical performance, though….

^ I wasn't going to go since it's more difficult to get to now. But this changes everything. They were so cool last year that this news is enough to light-up my fire to go. :drool: :heart:

Say erilaz, do you think
the best way to get to Fort Mason might be by Ferry Boat? from East Bay taking ferry to Fisherman's Wharf, then walk the rest?

^ Depending on where in the East Bay you're coming from, that could be the best way to get there. It still leaves you with a one-mile walk, but that's doable. I've certainly walked from Fisherman's Wharf to Fort Mason Center in the past.

I've never taken the ferry, though, since I don't live close to any of the East Bay terminals. My usual way to get to Fort Mason is a BART and MUNI combo. You can take BART to Montgomery and catch the 30 at 3rd and Market, or you can BART to Civic Center and take either the 47 or the 49 up Van Ness to Fort Mason. If you need to shuttle between Fort Mason and Japantown (which the film festival will most likely force me to do), the 47 and the 49 are definitely the buses to use.

I went to Himawari-kai's monthly used Japanese book sale today and bought 「絵で見る 地獄と極楽」, a charming book for kids about Buddhist heaven and hell, for one dollar.

You can see the cover and details of some of the pictures in this blog entry.
