I was actually just thinking that. I think it's something about the face shape/size and the eyes. They don't actually look alike but some of the things that make Maria's look unique are the same things that make Rei's look unique in my opinion.

Yeah, her name has a weird reading and there wasn't anything to go off when their profiles put up. 玲音 usually isn't used for "Rei". Reon, Rein, Reine, etc can also be readings of it.

A lot of kids in Elementary and Middle school right now have names like that. I keep hearing this from the Japanese teachers I work with. Japanese parents have gotten more creative with naming and will use really obscure readings so that can have the meaning and readings that they want for their kids. The teachers are mostly complaining when they tell me since they can't read names correctly a lot of the time now.

But of course this also translates to us also having trouble getting names of new girls when we only have Kanji and not sound clips to go from XD

I can imagine XD.

I mean, from H!P alone, we have 春水, 嬉唄 (probably my favourite idol name), 希空, 結 (I don't think it's a common name anyway?) and 樹々.

Also correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 聖 an unusual kanji for "Mizuki"?

"Kirakira names" is a thing these days and while most of them are fine, there are some really ridiculous ones out there.

"Kirakira" means sparkly/glittery. And basically it's "names where actual kanji reading doesn't make sense" lol. The names chosen kinda ~glitter~ because. >>;
It's where parents are pushing it a bit too far when they put give their kid the kanji for "road" (道;Michi) but give them the reading ロード (Roodo; Road). Or, one of the more popular and most awful ones: 黄熊 (Yellow+bear) and choose to read is at Pooh. I'm serious. This ranked #2 on most popular names etc.
Some aren't that bad (Shimamura Uta's name is a bit like that too and that's not too bad) but there are quite some horrible ones out there. >> English words made into katakana made into kanji etc. It's... going too far these days. Way too far.
