Evenings after work, she studies a worn-out videotape, which will show her where to find a suitcase full of $100 bills. Thing is, it's just a VHS dub of Fargo. East meets Midwest as Kumiko skips off to America to find the buried treasure.

Only Lovers Left Alive — Jim Jarmusch makes vampires cool again, as Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play a vampire couple who reminisce about the good old days (decades or centuries ago), complain about the "zombies" (all of us brain-dead mortals), and drive around late at night on the deserted streets of decaying Detroit. Atmospheric and moody, but occasionally very funny, as well.

More vampiric goodness as I finally got around to seeing Byzantium (2012), starring Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton. Loved it.

I stumbled across a DVD of the first five episodes of Волшебник Изумрудного города (The Wizard of the Emerald City), a ten-part 1974 stop-motion animated serial from the U.S.S.R.

It tells the story of Ellie Smith (Элли Смит), whose clothing looks similar to Morning Musume's "Morning Coffee" costumes. Ellie and her dog Totoshka are in a covered wagon, when a tornado whisks them away to a magical land. The wagon crushes an evil witch wearing silver shoes. While in the magical land, Ellie meets new friends (a scarecrow, a metallic woodchopper, and a timid lion) and encounters a variety of foes, including an ogre, a saber-toothed tiger, a gun-toting wolf, and another witch with a cool guitar and flying monkey minions. Although there's another disc somewhere with another five episodes on it, these five episodes constitute a full story with a satisfying conclusion:

It's based on a Russian children's book by Alexander Melentyevich Volkov.

What's that? Baum, you say? Oh no, the credits state quite clearly that it's based on the story by A. Volkov. As Ensign Pavel Chekov would say, "It's a Russian inwention."

The Double (2013) — Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) has been working for seven years at a Kafkaesque job where he is barely noticed by anyone, including the girl in the copy room whom he's fallen in love with (Mia Wasikowska, reminding me of a young Claire Danes). The company hires a new employee, James Simon (also Jesse Eisenberg), who is everything that Simon is not — popular, outgoing, forceful, vulgar, dishonest — except for the fact that both men look identical, which nobody else seems to notice. Loosely based on a story by Dostoyevsky, it's very dark but also very funny. I enjoyed it immensely. Bonus points for "Ue wo muite arukou" and other Japanese oldies on the soundtrack.

I just watched Yes Man (2008) starring Jim Carrey and apparently a bunch of many and very famous actors, some of them I recognized only by the face. It's about a man who's spending his life on just avoiding to make contact with people and making excuses everytime someone purposes him something. Basically saying 'No' to every opportunity. One night he decides to attend a reality show about a self help program and he ends up challenged to say 'Yes" to absolutely everything for an entire year.

That was totally enjoyable, good actors (Jim Carrey the best! ) and good production.

Good movie. I liked it a lot. From the perspective of someone who's studying Swedish, the dialogues were also easy to understand because the characters don't say much, and they tend to repeat the same things over and over.
