In the interviews Sayumi says that Morning Musume's recovery is "倍返し" - twice as powerful. This is very smart of her, as that's a word that's gotten a lot of attention in Japan lately with the hitdrama Hanzawa Naoki getting close to 30% on a weekly basis in viewing ratings. It's a word the main character uses as a "main phrase" of his and it can be used in several contexts as long as the word 返す is involved and can be related to it.

Really just wanted to point out again how smart she is. xD <3 Headlines can look "Momusu will give back twice as much!" or something, depending on how they put it. And half of the people that would see that would recognize the 倍返し and think of the drama and thus be interested in what Momusu said that has to do with it. Answer is nothing of course. But it creates neat headlines.
Don't know if anyone cares about this tiny part of trivia but still.

^Yep, there was never any doubt Sayu is very good at those kind of things. "Returning it twicefold!" really does have a nice ring to it in context of Morning Musume's "re-emergence" lol.

Kouhaku go!

That Sayu punchline was genius! And also almost every article is pointing the wish (said by Riho, and said again by Sayu) that they want to go to Kouhaku, and that it has been 6 years since the last time.

Those 2 lines really got the media attention, so hopefully NHK will listen and they will be invited

Sayu says she has a goal of getting their 3rd consecutive #1, and since there are so many idols around now, she'll work hard in order for them to regain their ranking!
 
As for the release event, "I heard there were people who came early in the morning. We had a good sweat and lots of fun!"
Riho called out to the fans, "If we get good results for our new songs, I want to work hard and aim for Kouhaku at the end of the year!" and received loud, warm applause. Sayu said, "I'll be incredibly happy if we're able to get #1. It'd be perfect if we have end-of-year work too," expressing the desire to return to Kouhaku for the first time in 6 years.
 
In response to Tsunku saying "no new members" after the 12th gen auditions, Sayu commented, "According to Tsunku-san, it's a positive 'no'. The 10 of us will do our best until new members join. I don't want him to give up, so I want him to hold auditions again. I want people who shine to join us."

They average about 5400 sales/day after release date. Would they just keep that up, we have 120k settled.
But with this boom... maybe 130k is doable.

Tomorrow's numbers will be nice. 10k! <3 For sure will overcome 100k at least.

It's hard to predict -- we're in... uncharted ...territory with these kind of numbers, but I really do think 150k total may be possible. The composition of MM fans is changing. More and more of the total is going to be people who are not hardcore mowota types, who drift in a CD shop after the first day or first week to finally pick up a copy of that song they like. I think over 15k is possible for the second day, but definitely, as you say, we'll have a better feeling after tomorrow as to what the total might be.

I want to add too that I give a lot of credit to Sayumin's leadership for helping to bring MM back into prominence. She never stopped believing in them, and her confidence and exuberance helped sell their resurgence to the masses. With her at the helm, these days seem both miraculous and at the same time, a foregone conclusion. [EDIT: Disregard everything past this point] In saying "We will regain our ranking" she means that her goal is to beat AKB48 and reign as Idol JPOP's premier group. At this rate, I can't exactly say I would bet against Sayumi.

Well as for Aichan. Remember that Sayu is a kouhai that she had been with for years and she's also senpai to 9th gen. I'm sure she feels nothing but pride. Many OGs who are senpai to Sayu and watched her grow into the amazing leader she has become probably also have that sense of pride. And just Morning Musume's legacy in general. They all know they are part of the history even if the music and girls have changed. Now people can forget the scandals that destroyed the group and they can proudly say they are part of Morning Musume again.

That's what I think anyway.

Having been a fan since platinum era I am super proud myself. I've watched all these girls grow since their audition. I've seen Sayu grow into a beautiful woman and leader. I would have never expected it!

By analyzing these numbers, we can see that weekly sales are around 30k more than the first days sales, so we should get around 125k for the first week for wagamama/gundan.
Also, we see a tendency of selling 10k more for the rest of the weeks, so final sales of 135k are likely.
But we have a new factor, that is increasing popularity and attention, so sales should get some boost.

My prediction is 130k for the first week, and 140k-150k for total sales. Let's see if we can get these numbers

I just want to add to this, after thanking Sohee for that explanation of 倍返し Parhelion posted, that what I'd translated as "regain their ranking" was actually that term instead, "come back twice as strong". In other words, Sayu declares war saying they'll come back "twice as strong" and they'll work hard to do the same. I've missed out on that cultural aspect, so wanted to make sure and correct it thanks again to Sohee!
