1. I wouldn't. Isn't AKB still uber popular?
And I thought appearing constantly on TV was regarded a good way to actually promote the group she's in?
2. I really do not agree on the "punching bag" argument. I mean, yes, it's a big and essential part of the character to get those reaction to make it complete but is not the only thing she does. She also manages quite well to be laughed with. Her character is not that one-sided.

On your second point, link please? I would really love to see those shows because like the others, everything I've ever seen of her in varieties a very large percentage of the jokes is at her expense. She is not as hated as Sayu precisely because of that, she invites ridicule to herself while Sayu dishes it out the other way around.
I really can't see it any other way unless you can give me some references I haven't seen, what with Momochi being one of the most popular name nowadays with the uza-kawaii character type.

On topic, I think Sayonara Usotsuki is a step in a good direction for Berryz if they still wanted to go after the cool Berryz image. Still clinically disinterested in Chinatown. I'm very surprised myself that this single sold as much as it did but credit where credit is due, congrats girls !

As if how well it sells more often than not reflects the quality of the single.

If this was Momusu or ℃-ute about to outsell their own best single people would be lining up to kiss their asses and go on and on about them and their greatness. Berryz does it and it's excuse heaven.

On "Momo is more successful than Sayu"...
- Momo hosts her own show, Sayu never did.
- A TV station actually thinks it was worth sending Momo all the way to New York to get her hair done
- Momo gets more live appearences than Sayu.

Sayu also has a radio show she hosts, she started hosting it before Momo started hosting hers.. Her radio show is called "Konya mo Usa-chan Peace".

But yeah, Momo is more successful than Sayu (the people saying otherwise just really don't like her character.. ).

I would not say that Momoko is unsuccessful as a talent. But, I would say that her success as a talent does not help Berryz Kobo in any way. It helps Momoko, but it doesn't help Berryz Kobo.

A lot more people know about Berryz Kobo today than they did 2 years ago. And that is thanks to Momochi, believe it or not. Other comedians and talents find out about Berryz Kobo because they appear on shows with Momochi and thanks to THAT they also bring it up every now and then and wham exposure. AGAIN, that does NOT translate into sales whatsoever. And it doesn't mean that they'll get praised like Momusu is by Matsuko DX. BUT they are getting mentioned A LOT MORE these days than they would have if Momochi hadn't been successful.
That quiz thing that Iwao did about Berryz? A lot less likely that it'd have happened if Momochi wasn't out there.
