Baking/Cooking Thread!

Postby boinsie » Sun Jun 09, 2013 4:46 am

Because some of us like to cook!
... and for the others, there will at least be food porn.

So because of all the biscuit talk yesterday, I had to make some for breakfast today~ ^^

Image

The recipe I stole from my mom:

Spoiler: show
Preheat oven to 450ºF.

2 c all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 c butter
3/4 c milk, more or less

Combine 2 cups all purpose flour with baking powder and salt. Cut in margarine using pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center; stir in milk just until dough clings together. Knead gently on floured surface; roll or pat to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter or the top of a drinking glass. Do not twist. Dip cutter or glass in flour between cuts as necessary.

Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 450ºF for about 12 minutes.

Makes about 10 biscuits.

My substitutions: As always, I use half all-purpose flour, half whole wheat pastry. I use salted butter for everything, so I omitted half of the salt. My cutter is of a somewhat larger diameter than whatever was used for this recipe, so I only came up with 7 biscuits. Technically I feel like I should have probably used a bit more milk than what I used, and maybe rolled them out less thinly (maybe 3/4"?)

But they were still tasty.

Baking seems so challenging for absolute noobs, I may try some microwave stuff before moving to the real deal

I guess technically I could bake but I don't really have the patience for precise measurements/bake time.

I much prefer cooking because I tend to do the "this looks like the right amount" kind of baking.

I don't cook. I assemble food. For example, a sandwich or a tuna salad

I baked cookies from scratch once, and the dough was about to be thrown around the room while I was mixing it with a mixer. Yeah, I don't like the mixer. The cookies turned out fine though.

I only cook really easy things, like stir-frying meat and vegetable or scrambled eggs. Of course there are frozen food that I can bake/microwave/steam and boxed curry, but that doesn't count. :hehe: I can make chawanmushi in a microwave though, and that one I only sort of count because I keep having to experiment with the microwave power and time, and I used to have a recipe clipped to the fridge but someone threw it away. Boiling noodles and pasta is also doable.

Basically, I don't do things with special names like lasagna or Thai food. I can follow recipes to make new things, but I don't have the patience for that most days. :hehe:

I don't consider myself a good cook at all, but I can follow a recipe. When it comes to the "wing it, just throw in what looks right"--that's when it all falls apart. :hehe:

Once I tried making curry from scratch, and it was disgusting because I ended up tasting the version of it without ANY salt/soy sauce before I realized I had to put some.
