Well, typically we are singing songs that were originally sung by females who naturally have a higher range than boys, so pitch shifting the song down is necessary or I wouldn't be able to hit half the notes.
There is a way to lower the pitch of the vocals while keeping the rest of the song normal:

By lowering the pitch by a certain number of notes you get a version where the vocals will be close to the same key as
the original so it won't sound weird. (lowering by 5 or six semitones will only flat or sharp one note).
