Wednesday morning update, after a full day of getting settled and catching up…

Zunu wrote:Also I know you were bummed about all your food spoiling but I'm wondering if the ambient temperature in your unit remained cold while the power was out, that maybe some of the food didn't spoil after all?

Yeah, it looks like that's what happened. The ambient temperature in the unit fell to 45–50℉ (7–10℃), so the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the refrigerator was quite small. We threw out some items that were already open and/or long past their expiration dates, just to be safe.

We have a LOT of meat in the freezer, which came with the move last summer. I'll have to judge that stuff on a case-by-case basis. It was well wrapped and tightly packed, and it was frozen solid again just 12 hours after power was restored, so it seems okay. I looked at each package to see if juice leaked, pooled in the bottom, and then refroze, and I didn't see much at all. Ultimately, though, I'll have to thaw each package as I plan to use it and then examine it more thoroughly.

Fortunately, all of that frozen meat helped to keep everything else cold. I'm not worried at all about stuff like chicken fingers, French fries, and frozen dinners that are already cooked and only need to be reheated. And the ice cream slumped a bit and then became gritty when it refroze, but otherwise it's scoopable and edible after microwaving for a few seconds.

We're getting more snow and wind today (Friday), and with them we're getting brownouts.

I'm tired of this $#!%.

EDIT: And now lightning.

Wow. I was just on the bus, coming home from seeing Otoboke Beaver in Berkeley, and there was this guy pontificating on his phone (or maybe talking to himself or communicating over cosmic airwaves) about the wisdom he had gained from "five-dimensional thinking". His etymologies of words particularly amused me. According to him, kindergarten is called that because it's "kind of a garden" where misinformation is planted in children's minds. A library is called a library because it "buries lies in the brain". I'll say it again: WOW.

I can't help but notice that it does anger me how hard it is to pronounce angerme. And how wacky tsubaki is. No need, I'll just "wow" myself.

^ Yeah, I can't see their name without seeing "anger me". I wish they were still called S/mileage.

I just keep reminding myself to say "anjurumu" instead.

I had to cancel my Amtrak ride to Atlanta that was supposed to be tomorrow. If you've been paying attention to the Norfolk Southern fiasco, then you might know that another one of their trains derailed in Alabama this morning. On the same rail line that Amtrak uses. The railroad itself is totally wrecked, so there won't be any trains running that route anytime soon.

Speaking of Amtrak. They seem to be in full refurbishment mode on some of their older trains. We do a bit of work for them and I’ve noticed we’ve been pumping out lots of stuff in the last few years.

Finally bought my plane ticket to Japan for this June! I’m probably gonna stay about a week and half before going to Thailand (flying out of Osaka at the end).

I'm sure you'll have an amazing time!
Do you have a lot of family there that you still keep in touch with?

My stepdad retired a few years ago so he and my mom are there now (northern part of Thailand but they also have a place a bit south of Bangkok closer to the coast). My sister and my dad live in Bangkok.

Basically all the ones I’m close to are in Thailand. XD
