If you make your home base in Osaka, it's also possible to fit in a solid day of sightseeing in Hiroshima and Miyajima, if you get an early start. It takes 90 minutes to get from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima by shinkansen.

During the entirety of my week in the Kansai region, I stayed at a hotel within walking distance of Shin-Osaka Station (a major shinkansen hub) and from there I made trips to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, Takarazuka, and Hiroshima/Miyajima. As Amped mentioned, most of these places are close together; from Shin-Osaka Station to Kyoto Station it's only 15 minutes by shinkansen.

For me personally, Tokyo is a necessary part of any trip to Japan, but that's because of pop culture and shopping. If you're mainly going for traditional culture and have only a week, Kansai is definitely the way to go.

Nara is one of my favorite places. I stayed at an inn that had traditional meals prepared for you for breakfast and dinner. It was a great experience. They also had a bath but I was too chicken to try it out.

In Nara you will of course want to buy some shika senbei and feed the deer.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area calls for more thunderstorms and heavy rain Thursday. Another weather system is projected to bring additional rain and periods of stronger winds this weekend and next week.

As far as the bomb cyclone and the third atmospheric river storm to roll through the region, I kicked its ass. No water in back yard this time. I will photo what I did later. I also figured how to get the barrel overflow to be more productive. I didn’t see barrel overflow and the storm was worse than previous one.

ps: the squirrel survived and picked up his peanuts

Sorry to hear that.
Solution #1. Get the ends to the lowest point possible so that gravity will pull the water through. I just had them on the level part of the lawn which has a downward slope.

Solution #2. What I did was put out buckets and wash tubs to catch the rainfall. During breaks in the rain I would dump the water buckets into the rain barrel!

That's it.

Smart squirrel he already got today's peanuts before the next downpour.

The squirrel knows what to do! XD

We are definitely getting the Bay Area's weather here in Southern California - I always forget what that's like until it happens, but this has reached the point where it just plain feels like a soggy San Francisco day.

I landed at Oakland Airport this evening after spending nearly a week in New Mexico, and of course the rain was pouring down when I arrived. The agent at the Airport BART Station told me it had been sunny all day and that the rain had just started.

:D Wow, no standing water in my backyard after latest storm. I need to market my contraptions! :grinning:

Break in the rain until 1:00 AM now.

I did not realize how much those vintage wash tubs are worth until I looked on ebay.

The squirrel cached in already too.

I’m having an issue seeing videos on here while using my phone. Is there an issue with anyone else? I have an apple phone.
