Very true, so visitors to Japan shouldn't be surprised if they end up in one of the many, many places that don't accept them. When I was in Japan, the plastic that got the most use was the debit card I used to get cash from Citibank and 7-Eleven ATMs. On my last trip over there, 2½ weeks in 2015, I used a credit card only four times, and all of those were at physical media stores (CDs, DVDs, records, books). Having $100 in cash in my wallet at home is a rarity; in Japan it was standard operating procedure for me to carry that much or more.
