Well the first time the finalists were: Oura, Yamaki, Yokogawa, Danbara, Haga, and Funaki

while the second auditions were: Shimamura, Ozeki, Kamikokuryou, Tanimoto, Asakura, Ogata H, and Nonaka (and 2 unknown participants)...

I doubt Utachan would've been the one everyone would've fawned over. If I had to guess if it was televised, I think Nonaka, Ozeki, and Kamikokuryou would've been mostly eyed upon for Morning Musume. (but that's just my opinion on that).


I just love that people who failed auditions are still going to most likely be in a group regardless though

What made Uta-chan was her debut performance, which with the group's "cute girls from the countryside" theme fit perfectly. Morning Musume's cutesy songs are mainly coupling or album tracks, so it's unlikely that we would see that side of her right away.

She was naturally adorable, though, so she probably would have done something naturally adorable during the audition footage that made people go "WANT HER."

I think Ogata would have been the surprise. The Aika/Konno/Tsuji.

^ I agree completely. Ogata would have become the next Aika. I would have personally been upset about Uta, Ozeki, and Moe not getting in, but I probably would have loved Nonoka. I think we all would have. (Think of how crazy us foreign fans would have went when we found out she spoke English!) We would have been upset that no KSS were there and then kind of happy when Akane and Maria were chosen... Though knowing that Uta, Ozeki and Moe existed and didn't get in in favor of Akane would have probably upset me. I'm really hoping Akane becomes super amazing in a few years and proves hypothetical me wrong.

That's one reason why I'm glad they don't show footage until afterwards anymore. I'd hate to have another Aika situation, especially since it wasn't her fault that she got chosen. The only fault she made was showing up to the audition in the first place.

Aika wasn't really disliked because she was chosen, she was disliked because she was the ONLY one chosen

Poor Aika. I always felt they chose her because they didn't want someone to overshadow JunJun and LinLin when they joined. It was all "wtf?" When she joined but when the Chinese members came in it was like, oh this makes total sense now.

I prefer to think that the girls who pass auditions pass on merit and sometimes as fans we don't understand what the judges were basing their decisions on since the judges get to look at 100% of the footage and are also physically there as opposed to us fans who only see a tiny fraction of the audition process.

This is always true and the BEST CASE for this is Maachan. She wasn't really a favorite, in fact she was mostly forgettable. People were clearly way more attached to Ayumi, Haruka, Harunan, and Sara. I think Meru had a bit of a supporter base too?. Maachan was a huge surprise when she was chosen but no one is even questioning why she got in now.
