He was probably reaching for her diaphragm, which is quite important in certain singing techniques. The whole point of his lesson was to learn the girls to sing from their diaphragm, rather than their throats. It puts less strain on the vocal cords, I think.
Not to mention I think he plays for the other team ....

he also has an amazingly large bubble butt as well. nothing to fear here.
