OK -- I just watched the Music Station appearance. And i agree with what most people have been saying -- there's no need to add any new members right now, because the current version of MoMusu has the whole thing down beautifully. I had almost forgotten how impressive a MS appearance can be -- not just for the prestige and the exposure (as valuable as those things are), but also for the showcasing: Music Station's staging and camera work are first-rate, and every close-up shot was pure gold in terms of presenting the individual members of the group to the public.
In fact, in a lot of ways, the MS appearance brought the new Morning Musume into sharper focus for
me. I admit that I haven't followed MoMusu in recent years as closely as I used to, but still, I've listened to the singles, watched the PVs and other clips, spend enough time here picking up everyone's enthusiasm and opinions, and I've developed my own favorites and biases -- enough so that I can say I really have been following the group more closely than I did a few years ago. But in a lot of ways, they still seemed to be a bit too much of a blur (in terms of bringing out the character of the individual members on stage).
But with MS appearance didn't seem like a blur at all -- I could
see it all -- Sayu/Riho/Mizuki up front, the others when they had lines, and the individual girls in the background -- in a way that frequently doesn't come across in the PVs. Even little bits like Kaori Jr.'s (I mean Haruna's
) quick turn of the head and back came across beautifully in close-up Things like that can do an enormous amount to sell the group to the wider audience that it's going for.
(And maybe maybe maybe -- I hope -- they'll be back on for the next single. Their performance was good enough so it seems like a real possibility.)
If madness made us strong, we would all be invincible.
