I'm a big fan of the Platinum Era, but I must be honest, I don't believe they'd sell as much as the current MM, even if they had the same amount of promo.

And I gotta admit they were on the dull side... Thankfully, their performance level was the highest in the whole MM history, that's for sure

I'm a huge fan of platinum era as well. And while I do think they would have sold MORE with proper promo, of course the music matters too. Give them Wakuteka or Help me!! and they would probably have sold even more as well. All of those things matter.
Give this line up Seishun Collection and I'm sure we're not looking at daily 65k.

Also I agree that the line distribution has been getting much better and had they just had Riho dominate everything the way Aichan and Reina did then alot of the fans would have begun feeling frustrated. I'm glad Tsunku is giving the other girls more lines and pushing different girls in different singles. Masaki got a bit of a push from One two three on. Mizuki was pushed in Help Me! Haruna got a push in brainstorming and Ayumi had a push in Kimi Sae a little as well. I hope Haruka gets her time to shine soon.

Well, for one, the two songs (Brainstorming and Kimi Sae) were made to be effective the way they are arranged right now. Some songs don't work well to equal line distributions just as some songs don't sound good when only two are singing.

Riho still dominates both MVs though.

Having that said, of course getting new girls helps. That's a big reason to why they keep staying relevant these days - and a big reason to why they fell out of the spotlight between 2007-2011. But promotion and good guiding from the management side helps just as much if not more.

This might not be a popular opinion, but I think that the decline of 2007-2011 was caused by Yossie, Miki, Makoto, and Asami leaving within a short amount of time. Maybe none of these members were ZOMG essential to MM but the lack of all four kind of broke the chemistry of MM. Worse, these were the girls who did the best of variety shows and sketch comedy, so MM got less TV exposure.

Whew I feel like the "platinum comparisons with reborn" topic comes up every time a single is released and not just here too. In 2ch for some reason there's always a few diehard platinum wotas who keep insisting that if they handled promotions better or at least as intense as right now with multiple b-sides and handshake events they would've sold better than current gen members or some current gen wotas starts putting down the platinum gen and overselling their own favorites... it goes around and around every single time.

Not saying we shouldn't discuss it, it's an interesting topic after all. but maybe take it up the musings thread? I feel like "ifs" scenarios are part of what that thread is for anyway.
