^ How was Daniel Radcliffe as the villain? He's really been working outside of the Harry Potter box by taking on some interesting roles. I can't wait to see him as Weird Al in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

He did his best to chew the scenery but he was the weakest link. I just kept thinking, why is Harry Potter in that godawful beard? Kidding (sorta), no the real problem was that he was poorly written as an unbelievably one dimensional character. Pretty sure Ming the Merciless had more nuance.

I finally got around to seeing this. It was good...not quite as mind-blowing as I was hoping but still enjoyable. Some of the wackiness seemed a bit forced, and the script could've used a little bit of tightening up. But in fairness that seems to be the trend these days that any "serious" movie has to be well over 2 hours in length, I guess, for people to feel they got their money's worth, even if the story itself doesn't warrant it. This perhaps even could've been cut down to Black Mirror episode running time without taking away too much from the plot.

Even so, Michelle Yeoh is possibly one of the most watchable actresses ever -- I can't think of anything I've seen her in where I didn't enjoy her performance, thus overall it was fine. My date informed me that the daughter, who also did a great job, was played by an actor from the Marvelous Mrs. Meisel (?) who I wasn't familiar with, although her face reminded me a bit of Naomi Watanabe.

Anyway, bottom line, this was a better Matrix sequel than any of the actual Matrix sequels. :thumbs-up:

Petite Maman (2021) — Eight-year-old Nelly goes with her parents to clean out her recently deceased grandmother's house. While playing in the woods by the house, she meets Marion, a girl her own age. Marion has the same name as Nelly's mother, she's building a hut in the woods where Nelly's mother once did, and her house looks just like Nelly's grandmother's.... It's an odd little film, but sweet and compelling.

I learned just this morning that the theater where I saw it, Landmark's Shattuck Cinemas in Downtown Berkeley, is closing. I've been going there since the '80s, and I've seen all sorts of stuff there, from Hollywood blockbusters to foreign-language indie films with only two or three people in the audience. Since the Shattuck reopened after the lockdown, I've gone there to see Raya and the Last Dragon; Minari; Godzilla vs. Kong; Oscar Nominated Short Films 2021: Animation; Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street; Cliff Walkers (Xuan ya zhi shang); The Sparks Brothers; Werewolves Within; Annette; CODA; The Nowhere Inn; Wife of a Spy (Supai no tsuma); The Velvet Underground; Lamb (Dýrið); The French Dispatch; Last Night in Soho; Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (Gūzen to sōzō); Drive My Car; The Tragedy of Macbeth; Belle (Ryū to sobakasu no hime); Studio 666; The Batman; Oscar Nominated Short Films 2021: Animation; Alice; and Everything Everywhere All at Once. I think I'll go see Everything Everywhere All at Once again on $7 Tuesday, at what appears to be the Shattuck's final screening. Maybe I'll be transported to a universe that doesn't suck huge donkey dongs like this one.

Werewolves Within (Comedy Horror genre)
I enjoyed this movie. Moral of the story:
1. if your mail order auto parts are late arriving – BEWARE
2. when something is just too good to be true - BEWARE

^ That was a fun movie. I caught a preview screening of it at the Shattuck last year. It was during a Cinema Week promotion, so tickets were matinee-priced and popcorn and sodas were 50% off. Good times. *sigh*

The last movie I saw was Ammonite (2020). It's about a speculative lesbian relationship between 19th-century paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) and her friend Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan). It's a pretty low-key costume drama, except when it gets hot and heavy. If nudity and graphic lesbian sex are your cup of tea, I highly recommend it. If not, you've been warned.

Today I watched "Yentl" for the first time.

I didn't like most of the music, but I liked the story well enough - except the ending was disappointing.
